Kinda Neat Things

Well, mom and I just got back from the store.  I’m not sure why she decided to but we stopped by this place in town called Software City and picked up a new game for my computer.  I think she’s feeling guilty with all I went through back in June when Grandpa died and I had to help out with that whole thing.  Ever since then she’s been getting me and my sister things left and right.  Maybe it’s how old people deal with death ors omething.  My sister even got a new computer and it’s driving me nuts.  It has a big midi card in it and she’s been writing this god awful music that sounds like a cross between Skid Row and Led Zeppelin.  Anyway, this new game Myst seems pretty cool and I’d been wanting to play it ever since I saw an ad for it last year in Wired, but it was only for Mac then.  I’m kind of stuck in this area where you have to go left or right in a little mine cart thing and I’m really not sure where to go.  It’s a nice distraction at least it drowns out the noise coming from Kim’s bedroom.  Reminds me a lot of The 7th Guest but I never did finish that.

I think Joy’s coming over later.  Real World is having a marathon and her house doesn’t have MTV.  Sometimes I feel so used for my television, that or AOL.

What did Joy think of your new purchase?

And how long did it take you to solve Myst?

  • There is a clue as to what Joy thought here. Maybe I’ll say more later. Would you believe I still haven’t solved it?

  • But that post talks about Christine, not Joy. Maybe I missed something…

  • You did. It’s in there. But I’m tricky. :)

Ah… The only thoughts expressed in that entry are from family, so Joy must be related to you. Cousin?

You’ve only ever referenced me as “Chris”… how did “Rose” know my name?

  • Your full name is mentioned once in the post I referenced. ;)

  • i know that puzzle, that is the rocket type thing right? the one where it keeps bleeping and making wieird noises, and you have to navigate this huge maze? yea, that puzzle took me about a week to solve. eventually, i just said, “forget this stupid puzzle.” and looked at the answer. and it turned out i was just one click away from answering it myself. how’s that for irony? but i know how you feel/felt about it. that was like the worst puzzle of Myst.

  • That rocket puzzle was one of my most favorite puzzles of all :)

  • I ended up fumbling my way through the underground puzzle, actually. I have no idea how I actually found my way — no logic. Later on, going through Myst again I ended up using a walk through for the sequence. Go me. :x

  • I took the time to map that one out. Try a direction; add to the map; go back and try another; rinse and repeat. It sounds tedious, but actually I found it quite…uh, okay, it was really tedious. :S

  • I would have but I probably had a party to get to. There were a lot of parties when I was 14. :)

7th Guest was an awesome game

  • 7th Guest, 11th Hour, Under a Killing Moon, Labyrinth of Time, Welcome to the Future.. they were all very cool.

  • Aww the days of AOL. This reminded me of when I received Myst from my grandfather when I was about 9. Played it off and on for a few years. A while after that I saw Uru: Ages Beyond Myst and knew I had to get this. I just got the books about a year ago after Cyan Chat people told me it would be a good read and it was. So as much I am here today procrastinating an English paper and drooling over everything I can find in this treasure trove of a site. I have been following the story since the days of those fun mind blowing puzzles. I wish you luck in FTP and in of course Myst.

  • And so it begins…

  • I don’t get the reason for this post dating back to 1994.

  • @Saturn2888: It’s to give some back story on how they got introduced to Myst.

  • Wow. I cant believe its been 16 years allready. I think I got my copy of myst years after it came out, I’d seen Riven (When that came out) at the computer store when I was 16 but I didnt have a computer godo enough to play it nor had I the money.

I loved Myst but my favorite game was Riven. And to tell you the truth, I’ve never been able to finish a Myst game without a walkthrough. But I think riven was the biggest of the Myst games, mainly because you only played in one age so there was alot of content in it. I’d like to play it again, but the CDs are old and damaged and I keep getting errors when I put the disk in. I want a new Myst game.

  • I stumbled upon this site rather by accident (you might say I found a linking book, dusty and crumbling with age – one or two of them still lie around in the open desert here in Tucson, AZ., but you have to know where to look). I ran the original Myst on a 386DX40 running Windows 95.

Now, 15 years later, I’m running realMyst on my Mac Mini, and have discovered, to my delight, that a serious effort is being made to bring Myst to the big screen.

Kudos. A million times over, kudos.

  • My dad got Myst for me for either Christmas or my birthday (I can’t remember which–probably Christmas.) He said that he had heard cool things about it. My initial thought was “Um… OK. I was hoping for some racecar kind of game.” Now, I’m hooked. Thanks, Dad.
