The team is working out, but there are some tensions mounting. Even after just one week of the five of us getting together, it’s clear that the high demands of this process are going to stress our nerves regardless of how well our personalities mesh.
Phil’s laid back and as long as we supply him with cigarettes, he’ll be all good - but if we start getting flustered and don’t make our requests clear he has to stand up and take a breather from sketching. We’ve had to trash a couple of boards just because we had no idea what we wanted when we began and it turned out looking that way by the end.
Jeremy is laid back too but likes being left alone once he’s started sketching. We’ve come to realize we need to let him work out a wireframe-like draft and then let him be while he finishes and shades. If we pry or hover too much, they both start looking at us like we’re dinner. We have to be careful with that.
Ryan’s being a sport and shows up each night in a t-shirt that somehow becomes a topic of discussion. Since he knows Jeremy pretty well, he can keep conversation light and relevant and prevent us from interrupting only to refrain from uncomfortable silences. Ryan’s like the diplomat when he’s not throwing chairs. Heh.
Adrian and I have spent a lot of time bitching about our lives when we’re not working on reference material or drafting out a prospective budget. Chris and I have been clashing a bit on how much of my evenings this process is taking and I’ve been venting about that quite a lot. Phil and Jeremy are starting to feel like they’re playing a role in my relationship because they hear some much about it.
BW3 take out has been a source of good food and we’ve been sampling their sauces with buckets of boneless wings. (I refuse to eat off of bones). But a free meal and an occasional pack of cigarettes is starting to feel like not enough to keep everyone’s commitment fresh. I brought it up to Adrian last night that we should consider offering the guys a couple hundred bucks upon completion of the boards and he felt uncomfortable with it. Not entirely sure why but I think it has to do with keeping everything feeling friendly and like a hobby - not work. I can see a point to that, but I also know that the promise of green can push a man to almost anything (including getting all these boards done by November). I think I’m going to bring the issue up to Ryan tonight and see what he thinks. We could easily go in half each and cover a couple hundred for these guys. I’m sure he’ll understand that there will be benefit by throwing cash at this whole thing and if I have his kudo, then it’s our 2 against Adrian’s 1.
We nailed Rak on his death bed tonight, and the dinner scene with Veovis & Friends™. Jeremy also completed some really good sketches of the young lover’s hands. As it turns out, taking preliminary shots with the camera is pushing us in the right direction, and fast. The boys seem to be working off the photos a lot easier than the crap drawings we threw together last week.
