For The Press - A Project Summary

Jun
17

Well, a bit of the script from the original short, Passage to K’veer, has made its way into the script for the feature. It’s pretty much just the beginning few pages of a much longer scene. Funny how something we had first penned years ago - a fragment - has become part of the whole. It’s nice to know that our vision from the early days has held up and withstood the test of time.

It’s a silly little scene :)

w00t! I loved it! The flirtatious banter between Veovis and the girl is quite amusing, and I think faithful to Veovis’ character. Aitrus’ final zinger wraps it up nicely, I think. The whole scene strikes me an accurate protrayal of the friendship of the two men, as well as an effective set-up of perhaps more serious dicussion to follow?
I very much like the tone of this. If this is an indication of the quality of your work, then I am very pleased and encouraged! Keep up the great work. :D

You killed Telanis!!! 0_0

OH, and did I mention I really like it?!

That really was very very good. It seems so in character. You have my approval good sir!

Wonderful! Great dialogue between Veovis and the girl. :)

Yes what’s this about Telanis? With this and the casting I think I get hints of knowing how it feels like when you learn that you’re going to be a grandparent. Judging your single move, thinking about or make suggestions on how something could be better, running to find the imaginary death of Telanis in the book only to find another in its place… Precious little baby movie must not come out wrong. And if it does I can always blame the parents. :)

Thank you both for sharing this small but enlightening scene. Perhaps we will be seeing more of this well-written script soon?
*me stems the drool with his tie*

I have a strong hatred of anything that was written in Final Draft, after being knee-deep in the program for several years (and still in it :P), but, nevertheless, I was still very impressed. Consider whatever doubts I had eased–that script, even as an example of something from the past, was excellent, and I am fully confident that you guys know what you’re doing :)

“I have a strong hatred of anything that was written in Final Draft…”

I’ve never actually used the program. I do my work in Word. As close to Final Draft as I’ve come is using their font. It’s a pretty font. And the standard. :)

Could’ve fooled me. Final Draft really speeds up workflow on scripts–but, as I mentioned, it really does get kind of hard to look at after a while.

Of course, obviously, it would be difficult to transition NOW…;)

It’s a good scene, with good tone and characterization. But, if I may offer some constructive criticism, the initial dialogue between Aitrus and Veovis is a little bit too “high falutant” or however it’s spelled. It’s a little unnatural. And while I completely recognize the D’ni as an elegant and intellectual race, they still have to sound like normal people and not quite as stiff (regarding Aitrus) or verbose (Veovis).
I like the dialogue with the girl a lot though!

Very cute scene. :) Veovis got BURNED! XD

…while I completely recognize the D’ni as an elegant and intellectual race, they still have to sound like normal people and not quite as stiff (regarding Aitrus) or verbose (Veovis).

Hmmmm…consider the context of the scene. The “stiffness” of Aitrus is rooted in his struggle to come to terms with the Council’s decision to render moot all of the work that went into the completion of the great shaft - work which came at great cost, and work that he was passionate about. He’d had his hopes and dreams crushed.
As for Veovis, I thought his portrayal is in keeping with the character established in the novels. As for his “high falutin’” nature, well, he is undoubtedly of the upper crust of D’ni as well as the son of a well-respected member of the Council.

Wowwww, a piece of the script!:-O It’s like finding a new piece of the novel that I missed the first time through!

I will agree slightly with Ryan though, it seemed a tad stiff for a couple of guys who’ve just come from a tavern… but then, that’s how they were in the book too.

Keep in mind, folks, that the dialogue is written for a Brtitish dialect and is also written in period. What sounds unnatural to us in casual speech today wasn’t unnatural then. It is all part of the texture and tone of the story. With proper performance, it will play very nicely, I promise. For examples look at LotR and Gladiator.

Trust me guys…Adrian is right. I’ve watched movies like Star Wars countless times without thinking of stiff moments, and then read the script and thought of how stiff and dorky it sounds. It’s all about the acting.

You’re right, I’ve read it again now and the longer I think about it the more I like it. I’ve even been dooding pictures of it…*is a geek*

Two comments:

“Much like those of Vienna, this waterway (…) ”
Don’t you mean Venice?

“One is in need of lubrication for such things.”
Am I the only one who thought of… erm… unnapropriate things when reading this?

@Sal

Trust me, nothing unusual about it ^_^

Look around. Terms like “lubrication” meant getting drunk. Veovis is encouraging Aitrus to get drunk so he won’t be bored by Lord Rakeri’s… err… “presence” for means of a better term _>>

Actually looked over this and noticed something.

I actually acted this out (yes, I’m that pitiful) and thought the girl scene was either a little too drawn out or too corny. I’m only saying this thinking that they’re moving downriver at a good pace. It goes too slow for it to be natural.

Now, when Veovis says “Hello, did you hear me, you’re very beautiful.” That should be before they go under the bridge. As they get to the other side, I envisioned the girl having her head in her hands resting on the other side of the bridge… almost waiting for them.

Then again, you’re the writers XD Brilliant job, guys.

“Don’t you mean Venice?”

Um…yes…yes, we do. Wow. Not sure what I was thinking there. Oops :/

When I first read it I pictured the boat continuing to move, but quite slowly. It was still a bit too long for that though, so I figure Aitrus could have stopped the boat for a few moments, seeing as it’s a canal and there’s no current.

… dear Maker, this is amazing. Um. Wow. *fangirls Veovis*

lols @ Ryuu

I can say without a doubt this movie will make more than a few fanboys/fangirls out of the Myst Universe XD

All we need now is that British guy from “Two Weeks Notice”

(For all who haven’t guessed yet, yes, I’m a guy. I just HAPPEN to have seen numerous chick flicks >>

BTW, Under the Tuscan Sun was nice, but I don’t get why so many people obsess over it)

*spoilers above* wait a minute… crud :P

very nice and very funny. but when i first saw the capital letters in the descriptive paragraph saying “YOUNG WOMAN” I thought, “man, they must be having a hard time finding young women for the role.” took me a minute to understand that it had to do with the scripting process. but it was a very funny piece. but i do think it might be a bit too drawn out though. but that is just me.

Maybe it’s just cuz I suck at reading descriptions without skipping half of it, but I pictured them floating parallel to the bridge. That would allow for a longer scene. And I could picture it so clearly!!! Now I just need pictures of the actors, so they look right… Then I can watch the movie in my head. But it will be a thousand times better on the BIG screen!!

Did you mean Master Telanis dies, or Master Geran?

Yes, we’ve killed Telanis. I know, I know, it doesn’t happen in the book, but we had our reasons for writing it into the script. :)

I trust that killing him will be good for the movie. Keep it up! I really want to see this be a classic!

I guess it makes sense… and I suppose all will be revealed in time? ;)

Why’d you decide to go with Book of Ti’ana rather than Book of Atrus? I actually like BoT better, but wouldn’t it have been better to have gone with BoA, since casual Myst fans will have understood it a little better, you know, since they lead up to the events of the game. I mean, it has Atrus, Catherine, Gehn, and the Ages of Myst and Riven, and then BoT is mainly about D’ni, which doesn’t even come up much in the first game.

Anyways, I liked Veovis in the script. I laughed out loud a few times.

Herohtar

Because they’re making a movie based on a series of books, not a series of games. :P ;)

crimsonking
May 03 2008

But the Book of Atrus was the first book that was written, probably for the same reason I wrote above! :-P

Myst Fanatic
May 05 2008

Couldn’t it also have to do with cronological order? i mean, the Book of Atrus and the Book of D’ni happen after the fall, and the Book of Ti’ana has to do with the fall. It makes sense what you guys wrote, but i think cronological order makes more sense personally.

AndyBlooShoes

Whenever I read the three books I always start with Ti’ana

And it’s the best so w00t :p

Oh hey P&A, don’t they say “naming day”?
