For The Press - A Project Summary

Mar
09

One of the ways you could describe this whole endeavor is that we’re trying to bring Hollywood to us.  Thus far, we’ve managed to locate, communicate and collaborate with some rather weighty folks in the industry.  All of this has been done from a basement in the Midwest.  We’re shattering the notion that to be involved in a legitimate motion picture you need to be willing to place yourself in the over-saturated, deeply depressing geography of Hollywood.

We’ll certainly be required to travel to Hollywood on numerous occasions during this process, but we’ve already managed to do so much more than anyone really believed to be possible from our little hole in the world.  We’ll continue to do more.

Strangely enough, I happened to notice something the other day that seemed to be something of an omen to me (I’m desperate for meaning, I think).  We now have a Del Taco in South Bend.  I had no idea we were getting one, or even that they had gone national.  For those that don’t know, Del Taco is kind of a more disgusting version of Taco Bell (is that possible?).  The last time I saw a Del Taco was in California.  It would appear that our plan is working!  Piece by piece, Hollywood is on its way to South Bend.  Del Taco has apparently gotten the memo.  Hopefully the weather will be next.  It’s like manifest destiny in reverse!

Why can’t we get a real California gem like In and Out Burger or Baja Fresh.  Man, I miss those both so much.

That’s bizarre… we have Baja Fresh* here in the DC area (though more in the affluent suburby areas of Montgomery County than where I go to school). Why don’t they have them out where you are? We’re certainly further East than you.

*Not that it matters, given that I’m so hypersensitive to the oil in jalapeños that I can’t even drink water for an hour afterward due to the intense pain >>;

Apparently Chipotle cornered the market in this area and Baja scrapped its plans to move in here. Chipotle is a sorry substitution.

*gasp* How dare you call Chipotle a “sorry substitution”!??

Apparently Chipotle cornered the market in this area and Baja scrapped its plans to move in here. Chipotle is a sorry substitution.

Hmmm… I wonder. I actually haven’t been over to the Baja Fresh around here in a while (see aforementioned hypersensitivity to spicy stuff); and I know that Chipoltles have been springing up around here like daisies… I wonder if the Baja Fresh is even still there?

Meh, not that it matters. DC has things like Lebanese restaurants that do takeout.

… god it’s been so long since I’ve been to California properly.

I’ve never even heard of Chipotle or Baja Fresh, and I wouldn’t eat at a Taco Bell if you paid me, but we have Greek restaurants and Arabic restaurants, with take out too :), and they are just utterly fantastico! That and Papa Gino’s, and I’m all set!

…and Chinese food….must have Chinese food at least once every coupla weeks….

Chipotle used to be owned by McDonalds Coorporation and because of that, I am still stigmatized against eating there (despite their increasing trend toward all naturally raised foods). Besides that, we don’t have one close by so I can’t eat there anyway. I never got to eat at In and Out when I was in Cali, I got overruled by the rest of my family; we had “Crap in the Box” instead.

MC: McDonalds owned stock in Chiptole, which is significantly different than owning them… either way, McDonalds hasn’t owned anything of them since the end of 2006.

Ummmm…I live in Hollywood (I’m the guy that offered to help you when you came out here on business). I strongly disagree about the “over-saturated, deeply depressing geography of Hollywood.” I understand you were trying to be funny and anti-establishment, but I don’t know if this is the way to do it. It is indeed saturated with movies, which gives the city an atmosphere I love. It’s not depressing to me at all.
In fact (and here’s the crazy part), I used to live IN SOUTH BEND. That’s right, I went to Notre Dame. Beautiful campus…but I always found the actual cities of the area depressing. Old, rusted, decaying…to me, the midwest gave a depressing sense of fading inevitably into history. Same places you’re talking about, opposite perspective.
Anyway, I want to let everyone in the rest of the country know that not everybody in Hollywood is a soulless drone, robbed of their vitality and just producing schlock. There’s a lot of energy out here, and a lot of passion. I love it.
On a lighter note, Baja Fresh is awesome, Chipotle is not quite as good, and I’ve always thought In n Out was overrated. :)

Ryan Davis, I want to be clear that I don’t in any way hate Hollywood. I’m not one of those pretentious filmmakers that thinks that anyone working in the mainstream industry is a sell-out. I know first hand that there are a lot of talented and good people working in Hollywood. My comments about Hollywood stem from a very practical place. The town is over-saturated. It is very difficult to begin a career there. The cliche’ that everyone has a script is absolutely true. It’s very difficult to set yourself apart from the masses when you’re running around with them. Struggling to begin your career while scraping to get by can become very demoralizing after a while. It is depressing.
I firmly believe that being in the Midwest has served to our advantage with this project and our careers. We are something of a novelty because of our location. I know that our positioning outside of Hollywood went a long way in getting Cyan to take notice as well.
As for your assessment of South Bend, you will get no argument here. It is exactly as I described it in my post - “a hole”. I have no intention of being here any longer than it is necessary.
I’m not a Hollywood hater. It is the future of this project, and I know that. It’s a good place to be when you have yourself established and know that you’ve got somewhere to go and be creative and get paid everyday.

Ok. I get what you’re saying, and agree with quite a bit of that. Looking forward to any more developments!

Wow, I didn’t realize you guys were in South Bend. My best friend lives in Mishawaka with his family when he’s not going to school in Muncie. He affectionately calls SB “Stinktown.” Or maybe it’s not affectionately…
