For The Press - A Project Summary

Mar
16

What is the deal with the drama regarding the Myst Franchise page at wikipedia.org?  Yes, we put out a call to action requesting the fans get together and update the page  and refer back to this site — and we thank you all for the support and time — but why does it keep being removed?

My only suspicion is that some WikiNazi™  is assuming the project to be illegitimate and continues removing any references…  don’t get it.

Basically: wikipedia editors are asshats.

I’m not defending the wikipedia editors (thanks to previous involvement with them on the topic of webcomics I’m convinced they’re pretty clueless) but it looks to me like they only reverted the change once and that was due to someone neglecting to cite their source.

What, exactly, is the problem here?

I second that motion -_-

Apparently, someone’s also added a link to this website under the “Gathering Sites” areas… probably as it’s not an “Official Site.”

Well… I guess that means we’ll be getting more publicity here. Sweet.

I don’t see what you’re talking about; the recent edits seem reasonable to me.

I hope the reference to the page that defines Cyan’s involvement makes it stay, because that clearly explains that this is an official project.

Well the gatherings link seems very out of place since the other two leads to sites concerning real-life meetings.
But then, I didn’t know the dnidesk was official so maybe you can get away with it. :P

(What it needs is a third category for other important links)

I can’t see how this belongs under the “Gathering Sites” paragraph, which obviously lists sites that are organizing real life fan gatherings/conventions.

The news about the movie, also doesn’t fit in the Upcoming Novels section.

It probably should go under a separate section about Related Movies or Independent Projects….

I think it looks ok. Under “Movie” it provides a link to the Cyan involvement page here. Although it would be nice if it said, “Myst–The Motion Picture”.

Hmm. When I checked the page just now, there is no link to this blog under “Movie”. Further down, one of the footnotes has a link to the “Defining Cyan’s Involvment” page here, but someone just casually perusing the wiki-page might not find it. (Can’t say I include Myst fans in this, since I don’t think there’s anything Myst-related we do ‘casually’!)

Seems a bit weird to me.

Again, if I had more time I’d go ahead and make a full article on this thing. though I’d need some help from the Mysteriacs here to make sure that I’ve got all my sources straight, not to mention veteran Wiki-ites. Hopefully I’d be able to write it well enough that only the most asshaty editors will try to stab it.

… heck with it. I’ll go get myself a Wiki account. can’t hurt.

Looking at the useful History feature…it seems that TheDJ removed the movie section on 16 March because it was “unsourced information”. Then it was restored shortly thereafter, citing the web site as a source. And it seems to have stayed there ever since.

Yep, the link in “Movie” is gone….less than 2 hours after I mentioned it.

I still see the link under the movie section.

It’s been fussed with again, but not in a bad way

Some things that I think work best in wikipedia:
1. It’s more efficient to edit a wiki page using a registered personal account, and not anonymously. Using a personal account gives you also the option to discuss why a certain change should be kept, and defend it. And proves that you are not a troll.
2. It’s always better to fill in the “Edti summary” field, and give a clear short description of your edits. Also, it is more straightforward if the edits concern a certain section each time for a well defined purpose. Do not change things all over the place.
3. Like the latest edit says (actually it links to the “wikipedia is not” page where it is stated that):
Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links. “On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate.”

That said, I still don’t find the “Gathering Sites” subsection appropriate for listing the direct link to this website.

I’ve added a Wikipedia entry for Mysteria Film Group. Since I just created my account, it will be four days before I can upload any pictures (such as your logo).
Please feel free to add or correct any info.

I removed the redundant location in the infobox and reformatted the link syntax.

And now it has been tagged for speedy deletion because of “blatant advertising”.

I’ve replaced the biography with a synopsis of the major events leading up to the creation of this site, along with an estimated status of the site. *whew*

Hope this will satisfy the editors for now.

It would be great to add quotes from the two interviews to lend credibility to the WIki entry - is anyone up to the task?

Guys, thanks for the efforts - it looks really great! And while I liked the bios, and liked the prestige of having attended Notre Dame’s School of Film, Television & Theatre, it actually was inaccurate. I was never a student - just an involved townie. Just FYI.

You’re welcome!

Would both of you also like a separate biography Wiki page? Rand’s got one. And I’ll try to be more accurate this time, unless you want me to embellish the truth a little… ;-)

AARRGGHH! The Mysteria Film Group Wiki was replaced with a redirect to the Film section of the general Myst Wiki. Why do these roving editors feel the need to trash valid efforts to complete the Myst history?

[I’ve since restored it. Hope it lasts longer than two weeks…]
