For The Press - A Project Summary

Apr
10

In the past few years I’ve found that it’s trouble for me to see movies. Out of laziness, busi-ness, or simply not making the time - somehow I simply haven’t gotten around to it. This means that I’ve missed a lot. Maybe it’s the fact that Hollywood Video stopped carrying anything. Maybe it’s the fact that a lot of my little friends who were working there left for better things. Maybe it’s the fact that most blocks of 2 hours have been dedicated to other matters (any guesses?) . Whatever it is, I think I’ve finally found the remedy that may solve this problem entirely: Netflix.

Yes, it’s true. After a little urging from co-workers and a lot of desperation to have something to zone out to with Carla (the Buffy Chosen Collection we were addicted to ran out in March) I finally settled in about a week ago and signed up for the scourge of the brick-and-mortar-movie-rental-business. The speed of delivery was amazing (we apparently have a distribution center in South Bend). The quality of the discs is pristine. The excitement of building the queue is even better.

After missing it in our local art house, Vickers Theatre, last year and hearing how great it was from Adrian a while back, I put Once in my first queue lineup and it’s been sitting by the DVD player waiting ever since. Just finished watching it with Carla and I must say: it’s good Irish indies that keep me attached to my sensibilities.

We’re both getting tired. Carla’s still upstairs going through the recent Myst posts and watching loveable raccoons named Bandit eat cat food. I took my leave right after finishing the movie to rush to my computer and buy the soundtrack on iTunes.

Amazing what the internet has brought to our fingertips.

Love “Once” and glad other people are still checking it out!

Hey.. you should be writing.. not watching movies!.. Just kidding.. I have been looking at the Apple TV, it looks pretty slick at the rental on demand thing. I took the liberty of sending info on your project to our local movie industry contact. Hopefully, we can be of help when the time comes..

Tell me more about these raccoons.

Hello Carla!

I would love to use Netflix (sounds so cool!)… if I lived somewhere it was available.
Happy movie watching! Have you checked out Joss Whedon’s Firefly yet? :D

My wife did the same thing!

I can’t seem to get our queue under 70 movies. AND…we still get out to the movies once or twice a month. But, it sure is nice to know that all those films we missed will eventually show up at our doorstep.

I’ve been subscribed to Netflix for a few months now, and I love it!

Another amazing Irish indie is the film In America. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing one of the better films I’ve seen in many, many years.

As long as we’re talking movies, the best movie I’ve seen in 2008 is In Bruges. I guess it qualifies as an independent movie, but it’s got some big names. It’s excellent.

^^

Have fun you two. Don’t stay up too late now.

Hello to you, Artoveli - odd having a greeting on this blog. I like it, thanks! ::grin:: I just keep one half of the “Mysteriacs” well fed ::weg:: I have to admit I really am not very helpful to P in keeping him up to date with the film world. I tend to not sit still through a whole movie and I like to watch my favorites over and over again until I can quote every line. Not everyones cup of tea. I did enjoy Once enough to sit fairly still throughout. Obviously my eyes and ears lack the refinement to have cared about any lack of quality on the audio/visual level. I rather enjoy that feel to a film, makes the story more believable to me. Here I stop, I am babbling. Enjoy these two guys…they really are quite extraordinary.

I upgraded to a widescreen monitor, to watch Netflix (and Lost) online. Tons of movies available.

If you’re going through tv shows quickly, and need something Buffy-esque (aside from Angel) - have you tried Veronica Mars yet?

Otherwise, keep going with the Myst movie. Us impatient ones need product :)

In a fit of desperation, I rented the first disc of Invasion last night. I’m not entirely sure if it’s going to continue to be a good show, but from what I saw, it’s way smarter than I had expected. It isn’t the greatest work I’ve ever seen, but the directors include folks from Felicity and Battlestar Galactica. Two of my favorite shows. :)

I watched Invasion from begining to end, not the best show, but it kept my attention (which is difficult to do). The whole plot line was repetitive & never went anywhere, YET… I continued to watch, so they did something right. Maybe some of the bad humor kept me tuned in.
My point being… the show had it’s moments, but I wasn’t so crushed when the finale rolled around. (note: stay away from the water)

For the record, Felicity is the ALL time Greatest tv show!
I own all seasons and have watched them numerous times, and will con’t to do so ; )

Hello again, Carla!

I agree about In America, it’s excellent.

And on the subject of good Sci-fi, I was quite enjoying The 4400 a while back. I’ve only seen the first two seasons (I believe…), and while I’ve heard that the newest season had its problems, I can vouch for the quality of the first bit.
