For The Press - A Project Summary

Jun

Stormy day. Had to stand outside for a bit at work and watch for ‘naders. Got things in the mail. Fun things. New toys. You’re missing out if you’re not watching what’s new.

Well, yea, lots of stuff.

But still, we all know that it’s the cinematic we’re preparing for, right?

So, uhm, your life is FASCINATING. I mean it. But, like, when do we get to hear about the progress of the actual *project*? I’m getting tired of waiting for a simple animatic. The lack of progress in this area is both discouraging and irritating. I smell an intentional delay…

Hate to say it, because I’m one of the world’s biggest Myst fans, but…don’t you guys think maybe you released this blog a LITTLE too soon? Why put out press releases when you’ve got nothing to show? It’s kind of hard for anyone, even die-hard Myst fans, to get excited about something without any empirical evidence. When you told us we’d get our hands on some real media back in February/March, I think we were cool with waiting a bit. But it’s mid-June, and all we’ve seen are a couple pages of script that were apparently created with Word (why not use Final Draft?). I’m not trying to be critical or anything - I’m a screenwriter and an independent filmmaker and I know how it can be, and I’ve got faith that you two will put something great together. But according to the latest news, you aren’t even through writing the script yet? I’m sorry, but that’s really not much of a bone for fans to chew on. Hell, I adapted the Book of Atrus into a screenplay over three years ago. And it’s finished! Why get the community up in arms about a half-finished script? You may have more than that, such as concept art, pre-viz, casting, studio cooperation, a distribution deal, investors, etc. But if you do, let us know!

I’m sorry to hear that so many of you are so frustrated with the pace of the release of information. There is still plenty of story to tell, but you must take into account that we are not in a position to focus our energies full-time on this. We have day jobs and other life responsibilities that make is somewhat difficult at times to get everything out exactly when we’d like to. Believe me, we know how frustrating the waiting can be. We’ve been working on this project for nearly four years, and a great amount of that time was spent with us waiting for others to respond.
_
I will say it again, just as I have said before. This site is intended to be a view into the process of making the Myst film. It is not a finished, cleanly packaged, ready for consumption film. We are running a production journal, not a marketing campaign. Please try to be patient. We are doing the best we can with what time we have available to us. I’m anxious to get the animatic out to you guys as well. Sorry for the delays. In order to present progress on the project, we must take the time to focus on the project and make progress. The website suffers a bit when we’re in the midst of trying to get other things project related taken care of.

Sorry to mess with you guys.

Didn’t want to push you… it just gets a little sketchy and scary with all the waiting :(

Ah the down side to the Myst universe. You get the fanatical enthusiasm, but you also get to hear about what a crummy job you are doing and how all that would change if you do exactly what we say.

Mysteriacs, keep up the good work. Take your time, do it right. I’d rather wait and let the story get the attention it deserves.

My initial fanatical need to check the production blog has settled into a comfortable quick check every day or two to stay abreast of any developments. I thought it was pretty clear from the start what stage the project is at, so I have not expected massive amounts of content. I do enjoy the tidbits we get from time to time, and I am really looking forward to viewing the animatic. Sometimes I really miss the pre-blog puzzles that were so thoroughly compelling, enigmatic and exciting, but in the end just knowing that P & A are working on this project is very comforting. Their vision and direction instill in me great optimism for the future of this movie.
*waves to Patrick and Adrian* :)

Didn’t mean to ruffle feathers - I did assure you guys that I believe in you and that I think you’re capable of putting something great together. I suppose I just felt misled by all the hubbub a few months back regarding media to be released. I think a lot of people inferred that the project was a little further along than it seems to be now, but maybe that was just me. Keep up the good work and we’ll take what we can get. I think the majority of the frustration is about how little this blog has actually told us about production (or I guess you’re still in pre-production). It’s been more of a personal, anecdotal blog than a production-centered one, though I understand you guys are probably trying to keep story-related stuff hushed.

Well, see, the thing is… We realize that this is a work-in-progress sort of thing. That’s fine. That’s a given. The “amount of content” was never a concern for me.
But it’s very frustrating to me that 80% of the recent posts here are about events in your lives that have very close to nothing to do with your project. Based on the title, the hype, the puzzle, the way you guys talked…I was lead to believe this would be a blog about the production and buildup of the Myst Movie.
It seems to me that this is more of a personal blog about the daily lives of two guys who also happened to be working on a Myst project, than about a project that two guys are working on.
And I guess there’s nothing wrong with that. But I think you should have been a little clearer about that. Because most of the time, this blog isn’t about Myst. It’s about you two.

It’s very important to remember what Rand said about this project in his forward:
“The process is going to be crazy and frustrating, invigorating and surprising, infuriating and - most of all - rewarding.”

Well said robert… or Rand…. I’ll go with both XD

I kinda like reading about the day to day happenings….whether or not the events deal directly with the movie-making process. Like the birthday party - I like that stuff. When the movie comes out (notice I said ‘when’, not ‘if’ :)), it’ll be cool to have all that inside info on the writers, hehehe….

Patrick and Adrian, any decision yet on whether or not you’ll be able to attend Mysterium?

I can understand the desire for more project related info. There is more story to tell on that front, but we just haven’t come to that time yet. In the interim, we feel it is relevant to talk about the happenings in our life so those following along can have some context for the progress…or at times, lack of progress. It’s all part of this story. You really can’t seperate our lives from this endeavor. We have been living this project for years. Trust us, the four years of this project have not been fully revealed at this point. There is plenty more to come.

:D

Really glad to hear this. BTW, on an unrelated note, @Adrian (and Pat) did you guys get the e-mail about my art piece?

Hate to bug you bout it, just want to know if you saw it :S

i think it’s quite strange that critics find it necessary to peruse a site that they consider unsatisfying so often. why not simply check for updates monthly, if one finds the venture so very frustrating?

as the aphorism states, and for good reason, “good things come to those who wait.”

I think the point is, they are disappointed often, but hope that the next time will be different.

@ Adrian: I’m not asking you guys to seperate your personal lives from the project. I just wish you had been clearer as to what this blog is really about.
@ Helen of Troy: I’m not a critic, I’m a critical fan. There’s a difference. :P And I peruse because I care.

Quoting our first press release:

Now, a full narrative of the project’s every turn is being released at the website mystmovie.com.” …

“They have changed from being simply scriptwriters in our minds to real human beings whose struggles resonate with our own personal experiences” Mr. Vanderbosch is glad that fans feel this way. He posts daily about the struggles of his real life aside the whelming task of adapting Myst to a major motion picture.

I don’t see where we’ve ever been anything but entirely clear, thanks.

Re: Patrick and Helen

Sheesh - sorry I spoke up…acquiring silent monthly lurker status now…

Adam - no, no, no - don’t run away. We thank you for your comments. Your thoughts are welcome. We are respectful and thankful for them. We’re just gonna post our thoughts too. ;)

Patrick and Adrian - I apologize for my unflattering comments above…last week was a doozy, and I misplaced my frustration. Given the pages of script I’ve seen, you two know what you’re doing. You’ve got a grasp on this. And you’re obviously talented. I became one of those complaining people that I hate when I’m working on something creative and it takes longer than I’d like. I think in my excitement for the possibility of a real film based in the Myst universe, I got ahead of myself! But rest assured, you’ve got me in your corner. I adapted the Book of Atrus, and it went nowhere, so I’m vicariously getting my Myst-Adaptation-Fix through your project!

Keyword being “aside”. Again, it’s not like you posting whatever you want on your blog is a problem with me, I really don’t mind, nor should I. What you write on your blog is your choice. I suppose I just felt the whole concept was a bit misrepresented on what percentage is actual myst-movie stuff and what percentage is…not.
