For The Press - A Project Summary

Jul
07

The responsibilities of my life are many lately, and the luxuries few. It is for that reason that my camping excursion to Big South Fork National Park in Tennessee this weekend was such a welcome experience. My last trip (see Working Vacation) was a bit of a bust on the relaxation and enjoyment front. I found myself desperately trying to write through writer’s block while feeling rather lonely and not really enjoying myself as much as one would hope to on a road-trip. Not so here.

Helen of Troy and I met up with one of my lifelong friends, Justin (who now lives in Atlanta) and his girlfriend, Krissy. After a nine hour drive, we were greeted at our campsite by perfectly prepared baby-back ribs and corn on the cob. We ate beneath the cover of a screened-in canopy that they had erected around the park-supplied picnic table. Beer was offered and consumed. Stories were told. Sleep was had.

This one event is pretty solidly representative of the rest of the weekend. Justin and Krissy are masterful campers, and we pretty much just took full advantage of their passion and knowledge. They were the best camping buddies one could ever ask for.

The downside to this particular journey? I didn’t do a lick of work on the script. What’s worse than that - I didn’t feel at all bad about it. Even worse yet - I feel terrible about it now. Oh well. I feel quite rejuvenated. I’ll buckle down this week and get some good work done. I hope. We’ll see.

Why feel bad about it? You needed it, you deserved it! Now maybe you will have less writers block. We can always hope. :D

Yeah! What Lynnutte said.
You take care of yourselves who here, just look what happened to Peter Jackson, all work and no play make Jack……………. an unhappy chappy.

Mee is right, all work and no play is like beating a dead horse. besides, taking vacations always gets rid of writer’s block, and it keeps you focused. oh, and by the way, maybe you could give us a little hint as to where…. your writer’s block is???
; )

Aw, don’t feel bad about it Adrian! You needed one.

And I think he was talking about his writer’s block in his LAST trip.

At least you didn’t get sick on vacation! (Like me :(.) That is something you definitely do NOT want to do.

“No farther shoot
Thy broad braches, and thy root.
Fancy departs: no more invent;
Contract thy firmament
To compass of a tent.”

“Amid the Muses, left thee deaf and dumb,
Amid the galdiators, halt and numb.”

“‘Lowly faithful, banish fear
Right onward drive unharmed;
The port, well worth the cruise, is near,
And every wave is charmed.’”

-From “Terminus,” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Although I’m sure you are probably familiar with many references re:blockage, here is yet another: The Artist’s Way, A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron (film and TV writer, director, and producer) and Mark Bryan (writer and teacher).

“Leap, and the net will appear.”

Words like “I hope” and “we’ll see” are not acceptable… Back to work! No camping! Who gave you permission to relax!? *Cracks whip*

…(just kidding)

I’m in the middle of writing a novel myself, and sometimes find it hard to get to work. Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes to re-inspire. I let my sister look at my stuff and although it sometimes irritates me that she thinks some stuff is bad, it helps me to see it more objectively and helps me to move forward :)

I wonder where Patrick and Adrian are? Hopefully writing :D

I’ll be happy just if we get a blog post every week that says “We’ve written all these pages”.
