New Post, Old Writings

It’s 5 am.  I’ve been sitting at Patrick’s with the local members of the team (Patrick, Yale, Jason) working on a press release and internal legal documents since 11pm last night.  I am tired, but I feel you all need something else to ponder and discuss.  The anime conversation has gone on long enough (by the by, I find it funny that I informed everyone of my suicidal reaction to anime and then was subjected to days upon days of pontification on the nature and value of anime…sadists!)

This is the first time I’ve had the chance to revisit the 90-some pages of legal documents Patrick and I composed back in 2005.  What’s impressive is to see how adept we were at performing this task and doing so in legitimate legalese (the original documents were reviewed and approved by a lawyer – read: we’re neat!)

Anyway, we’re bogged down in allocations of profits, percentages of equity, indemnification and business expenses.  Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…

I’m done writing now.  Bye.

• Sounds fun. If you get stuck you get something tasty, then every time you accomplish something you reward yourselves with a little bit of the tasty. (No alcohol!) Hmm studying with alcohol, I’ll have to try that one this semester…

• Oh no! And I was just about to start a discussion on the merits of having bigger guns in a post-High School Musical world. Thanks for nothing, Adrian.

PS: My RSS for comments doesn’t seem to work, anyone else have that problem?

• Jessica Adamsreply

I hope to still Learn the nature and true identity of Deius’ monkey.

• So you just completely disregard and put down the entire medium of anime? You haven’t found one you like. Please tell me you at least know it’s more than Naruto, Pokemon and porn.

• I think Belldandy should play Anna.

• Did I read that right, we’re getting a new press release??!!?!?!

• Can you add the following line to your legal document: All the profits go to realXCV.

• @realXCV: What have you done for me lately? :)

• Reading your posts. :) Isn’t that enough? What else do you need?
-
While providing something in return is usually a good behavior when dealing with money, it is not absolutely required. If you have a line on that subject in your document, then add: “excepting realXCV”

• @Wishtar: I cosplayed Belldandy last year. Does that mean I can play Anna? Please?

• @SKW: Sounds good to me. You may need to get Adrian and Patricks approval but you definitely have my vote. :)

• @ Adrian – Since you’re perusing legal documents I’ll toss another on the pile. Nothing much…just a little *cough* NDA I cooked up.*whistles innocently*
Upon receipt of the first draft of Myst – The Motion Picture, I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein contained, et cetera, et cetera . . . fax mentis incendium gloria culpum, et cetera, et cetera . . . memo bis punitor delicatum.Deius Infectus, Esq.(a cookie for the first to name the movie I stole that last part from).

• @Deius – The original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Quod erat demonstrandum.

• *tosses Yale a cookie* :)

• don’t forget the ever popular Noli illegitimus carborundum.

I never have anything interesting to say to blog poasts, I just like watching the surreal discussions.

Can we have Jeremy Davies in there somewhere? I dunno if he’s sneaky enough to be Suahrnir… Could he pull off Aitrus? Hmmm….

• Ya’ got to wonder who the heck would be a good Veovis? Hm… what about Zachary Quinto?
Adrian: Sorry, and one more word: ANI—————

• myst fanaticreply

ORIGIONAL WILLY WO- oh man! Why am I always late on all the cool comments! I knew that, like, the second I read it! I want a cookie harrrumph *pouts* :( JK
-
And Adrian, Just by the sheer short-ness of this post, I could tell you were tired. I mean, it’s been a while since you ended one with “blah, blah, blah…”

• Jessica Adamsreply

@ Flowerpower: My all time favorite Veovis would be Aidan Gillen. When I saw him play Lord Nelson Rathbone in Shanghi Knights all I could think of was, “It’s Veovis!!”

• Jessica Adamsreply

I still think it would be cool, before July is over, for Adrian to write a blog about what he dreams about now. This time last year he wrote a blog about dreaming of plane crashes and being stuck in high school. I love dream interpretation and my friends come to me as some sort of guru to tell them what their dreams meant. I’m curious, Adrian, will you share?

• We know exactly who we’re going after for Veovis. In our mind there is only one actor to play the role. I wrote the part for him. You’ll find out soon enough who the chosen one is.
_
Jessica, my dreams have been a bit disturbing. I had one last week where I was in a meijer (local superstore much like Walmart, but not as hinky). I was with the entire production team and we were trying to redeem a coupon. They wouldn’t allow us to use it because the coupon’s language was vague and they had a much different interpretation than we did of its value. This led to a five hour standoff with store managers in which they accused me of looking like a ten year old. Not hard to figure out the meaning of that one…
_
I had another one, but it was way too personal and disturbing to share here (sorry).

• Jessica Adamsreply

Adrian, yeah your dream isn’t that hard to interpret. To me it sounds exactly like an analogy of all the producers you’ve been trying to get in touch with and getting the door each time. I’m sorry the experience with these people have given you the impression that your too naive for this venture. Or at least that this is the impression they’ve been having of you. I guess you also see this script as a kind of ticket or coupon to get where you need to go, with the whole production team. Sorry to hear about the personal and disturbing one. But I’m sure you have a fair amount of knowledge of interpreting your own dreams and you probably already know exactly what it’s trying to tell you. Thanks for sharing though :)

Speaking of personal things, about a year ago I sent you and Patrick an E-mail at mysteriacs@mystmovie.com. Did you two ever get it?

• Jessica Adamsreply

I can’t wait to find out who you have chosen to play Veovis! He’s my favorite character!

• Last night I dreamt of a girl interpreting footprints as an ability test and then using pink vegetables to turn dead people into stone puppets. Interpret that one, hah!

• Yep, that one is easy. Wanting to redeem a coupon unquestionably symbolises a longing for a childhood toy. Amatuers would say one you had when you were 10 years old, but that’s why they are amateurs. The choice of the setting being a superstore rather than a stationmaster’s office is a dead give-away for something that happened when you were 7. The five hour standoff leads me to think this toy was somehow related to some Western theme, possibly a toy gun (five hours – Riven – broken – fixed – doctor – Doctor Horrible – cowboys – saloon – dancing girls – feather boa – snakes – on a plane – need of having bigger guns – cathedrals – anime – Winnie-the-Poh – toy gun). The vagueness of the language on the coupon when combined with the store name, meijer (not Walmart!), obviously means that you want to learn Dutch. When store managers are the enemies, this usually suggest you subconsciously want a cat, or alternatively you need to change the oil on your car. Since the store managers had a different interpretation of the language on the coupon, I’d say you want to teach the cat or the oil (cat might be somewhat more probable in this case) Dutch, but you are afraid it will want a different teacher.

That the production team were your allies is perhaps the only real nut. If I had to guess, I would say you enjoy their company and feel a fellowship with them, as well as wanting to work together with them towards a common goal. But there isn’t really enough information on the team members to make such leaps of logic, any such connection is tenuous at best. Perhaps if we knew if any of them carried handbags – that might enlighten things a bit.

• Jessica Adamsreply

• Jessica Adamsreply

Junee, I like your use of imagery. You always paint interesting pictures.

• Our pick for Veovis is PERFECT, if we don’t get him I don’t know if we can make a movie, (well at least I’ll be crushed) and it’s going to take an impeccable performance to play the part of Veovis. He is definitely the strongest character in the script, and it will be amazing to see him come to life!

• Thestrangeredreply

Wentworth Miller should be a good Veovis, I bet.

• I like Paul Bettany for Veovis. I’ve always loved his work. Inconsequential as it may be (considering you guys are the big wigs) I think I’m going to have to read the books again to get a clearer view of the kind of actors I would expect to see. I have a lot of fun doing that with reading books and plays.

Woohoo for Willy Wonka! I might just have to watch that now!

• Telepathy waves, don’t fail us now! The Gods say…
Cameron Diaz- Veovis
Dwayne Johnson- Ti’ana
Amy Adams- The Philosopher
Denzel Washington- Gehn
Simon Cowell- Aitrus
Abigail Breslin- One of the five
The Undertaker- Another one of the five
The Gods would also like to add: Mwhaaaaaaaa!
…Telepathy sucks!

• I also enjoy Paul Bettany. We’re going after him for a role…just not Veovis…

• You guys should call the movie The Book of Veovis.

• “I also enjoy Paul Bettany. We’re going after him for a role…just not Veovis…”

Oooh… now I’m super curious! Are you even allowed to spill the beans about what lovely actors you’d die (or do dirty devious deeds) to bring on board?

“You guys should call the movie The Book of Veovis.”

At least until the next random subject change that is!!
Is curling really a sport? ;)

• Do you still want Carey Mulligan for Anna, or how did that work out again?

• “I also enjoy Paul Bettany. We’re going after him for a role…just not Veovis…”
Aitrus?

• Whoa, whoa, whoa. That guy who played Silas in The Da Vinci Code? Cool (and before you ask, no, I haven’t seen any of his other movies. I checked IMDB. Unless you want to count Iron Man).
-
I liked what I saw of him, and it looks like he’s a good actor, from his resume.
Could it be Aitrus?

• More divine revealations: Paul Bettany- Reekoo :-)

• Not Aitrus. No. That is all I’ll say.

• Hey he was in Sen kväll med Luuk! Too bad I can’t remember him at all. :p (Even more too bad that show ended. :( )
My guess: The woman on the bridge Veovis is flirting with hehehe What? It’s not our fault that’s all we have to work with. If he isn’t playing Veovis or Aitrus that’s the only logical part!

• So….. does this mean you are actively courting actors for the movie.. or you are just making plans to contact them?

• Thestrangeredreply

I’m too a but concerned on how how you putted Veovis on the film. From the way you speak about him, it seems he will be the good guy, and Aitrus the Anna will have the role of the bad guys, if they will even have a major role in the movie.

The Book of Veovis :P .

• I think it was mentioned before, but the concept is more like real life. People aren’t evil, they just do evil things somethimes, and to them, the motivations behind their actions are not evil.
Things are much more grey in real life. Villians have a human side that motivates them.

• Thestrangeredreply

Yes, ofcourse. What I mean is that I’m worried Veovis will get most of the movie, and Anna and Aitrus will be minor characters.

• Not to worry, Aitrus, Anna and Veovis are all starring roles.

• Jessica Adamsreply

@ Magic88889: That was me!! Over here, over here!! I said that. It was me who mentioned that!! yes!! there are no evil characters in Myst. All the characters have partial knowledge as to what is really going on in the grand scope of things and they are all just trying to do the best with what they know. As to what their choices have resulted in, usually get realized too late. And I think that is brilliant, because of all the stories I have ever read, Myst is the closest to real life in that respect!

• “I also enjoy Paul Bettany. We’re going after him for a role…just not Veovis…”
Hmm… he looks like a good Suarhnir (or Ae’garis, or the servant guy whose name I’m forgetting). Or as a young (but not child) Gehn. Hroom, hroom…

• Isn’t he a bit too old to play a 8 years old Gehn?

• Jessica Adamsreply

hahaha I used to think along time ago that Haley Joel Osment back in his sixth sense days would have made a good 8 year old Gehn. The whole haunted look, he had that down.

• I hope I’m not spoiling anything, but I thought this was an interesting choice. We are in contact with Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie to play a few of the walls of D’ni. I feel it’s perfect for them. All they have to do is stand there and look dilapidated.

• Jessica Adamsreply

*baddummmp cchheee*

• Jason: I’m not so sure they’ll be able to handle such a difficult job. I mean, just standing still without doing anything for a whole scene? Not even a sex tape?

• “Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie to play a few of the walls of D’ni”
Burn!
But if they did play walls, audiences would wonder why D’ni didn’t collapse sooner.

• To Angela Bonnie: Yes, curling is a real sport. I’m a curler. In Los Angeles, no less!

• Paul Bettany… Jennifer Connellys husband right, am I thinking of the right man? Speaking of Jennifer Connelly > Waking the Dead, great movie – thanks for introducing me to that one Adrian.

• “Isn’t he a bit too old to play a 8 years old Gehn?”
That’s why I said ‘young (but not child) Gehn’. An older Gehn (in his D’ni teens or older) could be telling part of the story, or he could appear near the very end as an “X years later” epilogue of sorts, or there could be a dream or vision of him older. Now, I’m not saying any of those things is likely to happen, but all are possibilities.
-

• Jessica Adamsreply

“But if they did play walls, audiences would wonder why D’ni didn’t collapse sooner.”
@ Flowerpower: I tip my hat to you! very good burn.

• Paul Bettany is nifty. Hmm, other people I could stand seeing in D’ni…
Michael T Weiss? Honest to ghu I could see Wil Wheaton in there somewhere. Alice Braga has a nice voice. Summer Glau does nice work too. *percolate*

• Eleri: Michael T Weiss- good choice!!! Have you even seen The Pretender? That show was awesome!

• Jessica Adamsreply

I don’t wanna be the party pooper but, how are we gonna get any of these actors to sign on to do this movie? They all require mega bucks! I don’t wanna kill the mood but, the only way i see this movie getting made is on love and it’s gonna take alot of myst fans to fill these acting shoes, besides, I thought Nate and Isaac did really great with their audition tape! Why aren’t they playing the roles??

• Thanks for the complement Jessica but the roles of the main characters are much to complex and deep to be played by Nate or I, but have no worries, the roles will be filled by very capable actors. This is not a fan film we are making (not that there’s anything wrong with that) this is a BIG budget film that will pull more then enough weight to get the actors we need, and it’s coming along, coming along nicely.

• I wish I could say more ;)

• this is a BIG budget film that will pull more then enough weight to get the actors we need, and it’s coming along, coming along nicely. That’s what we like to hear!

• What about cameos? If we could get Rand in it would be awesome.

• Arrrgh, forgot to say this: if there are any bookshelf scenes in the movie, the Myst series has to be sitting on it.

• You know Isaac, Mysterium is *ONLY* 7 hours away… *halo*

• …and we are going to Cyan HQ… not that I’m nagging or anything ;)

• “This is not a fan film we are making”
You’re not fans or you’re not making a film?

• Is it just me or the rss feed for the comments is broken? Not the one for this post but the one for the site in general.

• Is it just me or the rss feed for the comments is broken? Not the one for this post but the one for the site in general.
I have the same problem. I mentioned it in the second post above, but everyone ignored it so I figured it was just me. Good to hear that it isn’t. ^_^

• @realXCV: We are fans of the Myst intellectual property, have been since we first played the original Myst game. However a fan film is a small independent production that with out much of a budget. The Myst Movie is going to be neither of those. The budget is looking to be about 100 million right now, and that makes in almost impossible to be an “independent project”.
Here an example: LoTR was made by big fans of the books and the IP, but it would never be classified it as a fan film. The Hunt For Gollum however was a fan film and was shot independently.
I hope that clears it up. This is NOT a fan film, it is a BIG budget theatrical release that we are making.

• @Eleri: Thanks for the invite! Right now we are in and out of town so much with the project that we are unable to make plans to be at Mysterium, and it looks like August is going to get even busier. Tell everyone there hello from us and shoot us a post on the blog to let everyone know how it went!

• Jessica Adamsreply

If what your saying is true, Isaac. Then I’m in complete shock that you guys have been able to get this far in talking with a production company, congrats! And a little sad, because this means that Patrick won’t get to direct the movie and Adrian will be lucky to keep his writing credit, that is unless somebody else comes along and revises the script and puts their name on it. In a way I’m excited to hear it could be a big budget movie, and then I’m not. Hollywood can be a very ruthless town. I’m gonna pray you guys have managed to find good people, because they are rare to find.

• Static Jonesreply

BIG budget theatrical release? Yes Yes Yes….. sounds wonderful :) ¡Me gusta mucho!

• Patrick and Adrian are still planning to direct it, that has not changed. They are very capable of doing it, and it’s all apart of the package. We haven’t heard any real objections concerning that, we know that there will be some who may question the experience level of some of those involved but hard work, planning, and script are really impressing those who make decisions. We hope it stays that way.

• With a $100 million budget, and NOT having to pay a big director (if Patrick and Adrian are going to do it themselves) and NOT having to pay for the movie rights to the story (since Cyan gave it to you for free), a lot of that $100 million could be used for getting high calibre acting talent, top-notch FX and a good composer for the score (my recommendation: Jack Wall).

Sounds exciting! Good luck!

• @Issac: Ahh, you beat me to it.
-
God, it’s weird to see the newer people reliving those same conversations I had with Adrian and Patrick about the whole deal months ago. How it’s not an independent film, how it’s gonna be done through Hollywood, etc. I feel like an old-timer, and I’ve only been here for around six months, approximately.
-
So, question to Isaac and Nate: what is your job gonna be with the movie? Or is it more of a fluid thing, where the whole MFG is just one big think tank/labor force at this point, and that hasn’t really been decided yet?

• Animan, that’s not quite how it works :)

• “Animan, that’s not quite how it works”
I agree. There’s also “paying realXCV” among many other things.
-
@Isaac, in my definition, a film made by fans is a fan film no matter what the budget is.

@ Adrian: LOL So true. After 4 years of film school and working on an independent film, I can defiantly vouch for that that is not how it works! P.P.S. Did you get my email a year ago??

• Jessica Adamsreply

Adrian do not avoid the E-mail question this time! :P

• Jessica Adamsreply

Adrian or Patrick if you avoid the E-mail question then I will point you down and say, “here lies Adrian or Patrick, avoider of questions!!!”

• What was in your e-mail?

• Static Jonesreply

@Dr. Worm,

Are really a doctor, or are you just a worm? And, are you getting better at the drums?

• Those that know, pray tell those unlearned in the film school experience and inexperienced in film-making (me) how exactly film budgeting works. Much appreciated.

• On a small or a large film?

• Jessica Adamsreply

My E-mail was about how when I was 14 in 2000 I read the Myst novels and around 2002 I was trying to write my own script for the Myst movie I wanted to make. I wanted to start with the Book of Ti’ana, although I was going to change the title to “The Story of Ti’ana” and by the time I went to the University of New Orleans to study film I was telling all my friends about the Myst novels and how my dream since I was younger was to make them into movies. I thought for so long it was my calling. Then when I worked on my first film I realized there was so much about the movie buisness I didn’t like and how I wasn’t sure I wanted to battle those kinds of people for the rest of my life to make my “art”. So I got my film degree but changed paths in life, and I’ve been all the happier for it. But… I still wanted to see those novels made into movies. So I would type “Myst Movie” into the google search engine year after year, waiting on blind hope they would have somebody who was going to do it. Then..one day it happened, google took me to this website and I just cried. Cried for joy and sadness. My movies were going to be made, but not by me. I remember like Adrian and Patrick being horrified when the Sci-Fi network said they were making their “myst mini series” and I wanted to write angry letters to them saying how they couldn’t cuz I was going to make them into movies!! lol When I saw Adrian and Patrick’s opening video they sent to Cyan about what they purposed to do I was amazed how for the last 8 years (I found this website last year) I had been living a parallel life to Adrian and Patrick, even though I’m 8 years younger than them. I also wrote in my E-mail how I wished them both the best of luck and I was proud it was men like them who were going to make this. And I still am.

• @realXCV
Since Isaac threw out the $100 million number, I think we’d be talking about a large-scale film, lol.

• myst fanaticreply

*Pats Jessica Adams on the shoulder* I had the same exact feeling!
well… minus the film school… and trying to write out a script… and thinking I could be the director. But I always was excited to see if the books would become a movie. And when I found the site, I literally screamed “OH-MI-GOSH!!!! NO WAY!!!!!”
-
That was like… what? a year or two ago? Now look at the project! script is finished and mostly edited (I think you guys said you edited it as much as your heart would let you), they have cyan and Rand behind it, they are already talking to producers/ producing companies, they are pushing for major stars, and they are planning on having a huge pricetag on the movie. I won’t say 100,000,000 because i think that was just a guess.
-
So, needless to say, I’m still completely stoked!

• Jessica Adamsreply

@myst fanatic: I patted my shoulder for you. :D I know I’m as in awe as you are of just how far this project has come. And believe me, I keep all my family and friends up to date about it, even they probably have no clue as to what it all really means lol.

• Maybe they don’t receive/read/reply to emails except thoses by big names.

• Thestrangeredreply

I think what Isaac means when he says it won’t be a fan film, is that it won’t be one of those 5$ youtube videos. Type “myst movie” on youtube and you will see some. I think what he means is that it’s gonna be a professional film AKA harry potter AKA lord of the rings. Hopefully.

• Most of thoses youtube myst movies are trailers made from an assembly of shots from the games and their trailers. Others are made with green or blue screens and what you get is a character that doesn’t blend at all with the background.
-
I’m sure fans can do a lot better without needing a 100000000 budget.

• Thestrangeredreply

“I’m sure fans can do a lot better without needing a 100000000 budget.”

They may have the best intentions, but without the money they can do nothing. The sad truth.

Lickily we got a film with a high budget *and* fans making it, and not just any fans, but professinal movie-makers. I think it’s the best it can get, if everything turn out right in the end.

• @realXCV: If fan films are a films made by fans, most films are fan films. Why would many people bother making a movie on a subject about which they are not enthusiastic?

• @Static Jones: I think I’m getting good, but I can always handle a little criticism. Tell ya what, I’ll show you what I know and you can tell me if you think I’m getting better on the drums. I’ll leave the front door unlocked for you, since I won’t be able to hear the doorbell. ;)
-
@realXCV: Technical definition of a fan film, last time I checked, is an independent film made by those who don’t actually own the rights to the intellectual property, done completely out of their own pockets and for no profit whatsoever due to copyright laws (speaking of which, one of my favorite fan films of all time is Batman: Dead End. Check it out).
-
We’re not talking about an independent film for the little group of hardcore Myst fans. We’re talking a wide-release theatrical film with a full cast from the Screen Actors’ Guild and a large crew and an orchestral soundtrack and huge sets on sound stages and location shots in the desert and ILM doing the special effects (fingers crossed on that last one). Yes, it’s done by fans, and that’s a good thing, ’cause people with a love for the franchise tend to know what’s really important and needs to be preserved in the adaptation process.
-
@Adrian & Patrick: PLEASE try to get ILM to do the special effects!!! And on that note, I think we may have already had this conversation a while back, but… do you have any ideas about what the linking process might look like? And on THAT note… could you tell me about it? Pweeeeze?

• Off topic – just for the halibut, I just watched both the animatic and Delve’s Audition Project again, and I have only this to say…I can haz Myst Movie now?!!

• To go even further off topic: if you can choose be reborn as anyone or anything, real or imagined, what would it be? I’d be a Vulcan. Vulcans are awesome! I love Vulcans :-)

• @ Flowerpower: Wow. Just wow…

• The games suggest a few ways linking could look and sound. I prefer the original sound, if only for the sake of nostalgia.

• No no, don’t get ILM. They’re good and all, but to me most of the time their work has this slight plastic, unreal look to them. If I were you, I’d try to go with Digital Domain, now those guys are good. Founded by the great James Cameron himself.

• Adrian: What’s wrong with Vulcans? They’re great!!!!

• Vulcans: Pointy ears! Personally I think I’d just be me. Being someone or something else would change the game entirely and I’d rather figure things out for myself in this little realm before running amok as a Vlucan in another!

Heyyy… get the Skywalker Symphony (they’re real… I swear!) to play the score (done by Michael Giacchino of course)! Yeah! :) I’m a violinist and that’s one of the organizations I’d do just about -anything- to be part of! :D

• ILM? Hah! Weta FTW. Don’t let anything with Lucas’ name on it anywhere near the movie. You’ll end up with a Bahro with a Jamaican accent as comic relief.

• I’ll have to agree with WETA. The work they did on LOTR was incredibly realistic. ILM’s CG in the last three Star Wars films looked like CG. not what you want.

• But if your dead you’re not you anymore. So if you could be reincarnated…

• Actually, ILM is capable the very best visual effects in the industry. I think the reason their CGI in the latest Star Wars movies was sometimes spotty was because of the sheer amount of effects that Lucas had them do. But, their work on the Pirates movies, especially the last two were some of the best I have ever seen. It’s too bad, because those movies weren’t that good.

• At the risk of burning any bridges, while I agree that ILM’s work in the “Pirates” films was pretty impressive, that is where their CG begins and ends to impress me. I’m just not a fan.
_
I’m sure I’ll be accused of being a LotR groupie by saying this, but Weta is simply the best in the industry right now. Both on CG and miniature work. Digital Domain is also a very impressive company. I’m also a fan of Giant Killer Robots. There are lots of good effects houses our there. I just think ILM is quite overrated.

• I don’t care which company (or companies) will work on the myst movie. It can be done by a billon dollars company or an ordinary guy in its basement. What I care is that at the end, the movie look like what it should look like.

• RealXCV: Well, said amen to that!!!!

• Adrian is a LofR groupie… Adrian is a LofR groupie… nah nah.. nah nah nah… *running around in circles, waving hands*

• For the record I agree with Adrian on the matter of ILM versus Weta. Weta wins.

• “Adrian is a LofR groupie… Adrian is a LofR groupie…”
LofR? Lord of five Rings? Lord of fat Robots? Land on far Rivers?
:ridiculous:

• ok.. so I cna’t type

• Okay, ILM isn’t the best. Didn’t know that. ^_^
My demand still stands: I WANNA KNOW BOUT DA LINKY EFFECTS!!! WAAA!!!!

• Hot damn, I just took a look at Weta Digital’s website and I thi- wait a second.
STEVEN SPIELBURG’S MAKING A TINTIN MOVIE?!?!
It’s on their “in production” list, right next to James Cameron’s Avatar and a Peter Jackson movie called The Lovely Bones.
-
But I digress. They’ve got a good resume, even if the Silver Surfer was one of the most unconvincing visual effects I’ve ever seen, though it probably still would have been no matter who did it.

• From what I’ve read you all seem like you are legit and going through with this movie, I have hoped there would be a movie for this game for quite a while (The game already has the cinematic presence on it’s own). A movie for this game would require some high-quality cinematography, as well as quite a cast of talented actors, not to mention top-notch special effects and CGI. Do you think you all will be able to add all of this into the motion-picture, and have you had any thoughts on casting at all?

• STEVEN SPIELBURG’S MAKING A TINTIN MOVIE?!?!
_
Yeah, Spielberg and Jackson have teamed up on this one. They will each direct one of the movies. I don’t think they’ve figured out who will be in charge of others (if there are any). Pretty cool, eh?
_
Also, Lovely Bones is bound to be an interesting film. I’ve read the book and it’s quite dark in a lot of ways. The story stars a little girl who is raped and murdered at the beginning. The rest of it is a musing on the nature of heaven and death. It’ll be interesting to see how Jackson has made that audience friendly. Good book. Good Director. Hopefully it will be a good movie.

Just to clarify, the Myst movie is going to be off one of the novels – the Book of Ti’ana (the story of the fall of D’ni, among other things). They have apparently given quite a lot of thought to casting, but we haven’t been told too much yet (on this page you can see Adrian mention that they know who they want for Veovis and that “… Paul Bettany. We’re going after him for a role…just not Veovis…”, we’ve also gotten some other hints earlier back [but my poor long term memory forgot what exactly they were hinting at]). They’re looking for a pretty nice budget for the film too, so they can probably afford good CGI and special effects where needed.

• Adrian, why is everyone talking about special effects? There aren’t going to be any special effects in the Myst Movie right?

• I’m joking guys :D , Weta seems to be on the cutting edge of everything in the special effects realm, often times re-inventing the edge. They get my vote.

• Paul Bettany is an interesting choice for Veovis, haha. He plays a pretty good antagonist, that’s for sure. I am quite excited about this movie, I am sure it won’t be hard to find someone to back up a project as ambitious as this one.

• Jeremy Davies… *drool* Ehem, sorry, just watched my favourite movie of all time so far again. What’s your favourite movie? You’re only allowed to pick one!
(Now I most certainly have to watch Lost maybe.)

• LMAO! You know what is funny about the whole Bettany thing? Well first of all I’m selectively psychic. It comes and goes apparently, lol! I caught my mom watching “Wimbledon” just because she wanted to randomly see something with Paul Bettany in it! ha! I hadn’t said a thing either! Relevance you might ask: none except for the fact that I brought him up in the first place (though not to her) and small things amuse me. That is all!

• So…whatever happened to that press release that was mentioned waaayyy up there? Usually with press releases they get…released.

• Thestrangeredreply

Whatever effect you guys do, make white eyes for the D’ni. I don’t care how hard it is. It will be awsome.

• Words of great advice (for anyone in any situation):
1) Four walls make a house
2) Never read a book that begins with a monologue about death to an elderly person who is living in a retirement home.
3) Never write emo/ semi- suicidal sounding term papers- they will get sent to the counselors

• While we’re on the topic of visual effects and my love for Weta, I do want to offer a caveat…
_
Production is about to begin on “The Hobbit”. The two films that will be created for this book will probably have Weta quite busy for the next few years. They may not be a possibility for Myst, sadly.

• Thestrangeredreply

Let’s try to get this into production first…

• Weta will just have to hire more people, that’s all.

• “Production is about to begin on “The Hobbit”. The two films that will be created for this book will probably have Weta quite busy for the next few years. They may not be a possibility for Myst, sadly.”

…F**k.

• “Paul Bettany is an interesting choice for Veovis, haha.”
Well, if I interpreted Adrian’s comment right, they’re going after him for some other role. Off the top of my head, I’m guessing Suahrnir or Ae’garis.
-
“Whatever effect you guys do, make white eyes for the D’ni. I don’t care how hard it is. It will be awesome.”
That would look so cool/frightening (or maybe both).
-
And how in the world did we get talking about special effects and CGI anyway? I’ve forgotten already.

• The probability of getting Weta to do effects isn’t zero, you know. It is if you stop trying to get them interested. So, don’t give up. You never know what could happen- artistic differences, they expand, finish early, etc. Look on the bright side, what if they come up with a new technique (or whatever) that revolutionizes effects and what if they do work on Bot. Still keep them in mind if they’re what you want.

• I always thought of the D’ni of having regular eyes, just really big pupils, you know, because they need them to be able to see in the dark cavern, so that they need those special glasses when they go to the surface.

• some old guyreply

Okay so I was really excited to see that someone, anyone was even thinking about making a movie remotely concerning myst. Then reading the about the long tortuous rollercoaster of the efforts has left me concerned. I am not getting any younger and I would really like to get to see this before my eyes are totally gone. I’m not D’ni you know. is there any target date for poroduction? As the ancients have said “No date?… its only a wish”.

• Actually the D’ni have regular eyes but very THIN pupils.

• Hobbit production is possibly on hold because the Tolkien estate is suing New Line (for the same reason PJ did- underreported profits.)

Strange conversation at our house: Christopher Lambert as Creepy D’ni Guy, just for the voice.

• Thestrangeredreply

“Actually the D’ni have regular eyes but very THIN pupils.”

Yeah, I’m looking at Aitrus image (http://en.mystlore.com/wiki/File:Aitrus.jpg. Could you atleast make him look a bit like that Mysteriacs? for continuity? pretty please? well atleast the beard) and yeah, what do you know, they did have thin pupils, not white eyes.

So Myteriacs, make thin pupils :D .

• Hm, not sure about the eyes… It would be neat, but wouldn’t it be a very arduous task to change the eyes of nearly everyone in the movie?
And even disregarding that, I think changing the eyes would be much too distracting. Not necessarily in an uncanny valley way, but when people watch it, instead of paying attention to what is going on in the movie, they would just go: “Hey, look at their eyes! Their eyes are weird!”. That’s not what we want, is it?
I for one hope that they concentrate on making a good movie first and pleasing fans second when it comes to things like this. It should be as detailed and authentic as possible, but not in a way that steals the focus from the story too much. Or what do you think?

• instead of paying attention to what is going on in the movie, they would just go: “Hey, look at their eyes! Their eyes are weird!”

Not any more than people were distracted by the Elves’ pointy ears in LotR.

• Or Vulcans for that matter! :D

• Personally, I was completely distracted by the fact that there were pointy-eared Vulcans in the Lord of the Rings. :P

• They wouldn’t need to change the eyes of everyone digitally, it can be done relatively cheaply with contacts. TV shows, as well as movies, have been using this to change eyes for ages.

• Today is International Live Long and Prosper day. Hug your favorite Vulcan! (Or make some Vulcan Friends) :-)

• ‘the show must go onnnn’ …will this ever end? say it ain’t sooo [falls on mah knees and begs the higher universal power to show mercy] I want my MYST! in any shape or form! hercules, hercules! buys my ticket early for the BIG SHOW! * wonders if Tim Burton and Disney are a likely blend for this one tooo…MYSTical real[m]…oh yes!

• > Production is about to begin on “The Hobbit”. The two films…
.
Now maybe three. Two Hobbit films, PLUS a bridge movie to LoTR.

• “The Book of Atrus” says of Gehn, “…the irises of his eyes were huge, a thin circle of pale green about them.” Even if another reliable source contradicts this one, I would choose large pupils for scientific accuracy. Our own pupils must grow in dim places to let enough light into the eye.

• I don’t care about the pupils as long as the eyes are pale. And I don’t care about the eyes nearly as much as I want the D’ni people in general to have a style that doesn’t make you think they look medieval/historic/futuristic/asian/whatever. They should have a stylish alien look but nothing that’s ever been done before. The D’ni people must make such an impression that people will dress like them and say that it’s their style, like goth or lolita or steampunk…
Hmm, creating a civilization, that’s quite a lot of work.

• Come on, guys–I know you have more to write about now! :-)

• blackmesaboyreply

I just hope the D’ni don’t end up looking like Elves. And I think they should have pale eyes. :-)

• Have we driven you two crazy with all the eye-talk yet?

• Thestrangeredreply

Gehn was only half D’ni, so his eyes weren’t D’ni’s eyes. Look at Aitrus pic from Riven, for example.

• Eyes are the windows to the soul…

• So…ANY updates? Been awhile.

• @thestrangerd: That’s a good point, however, as we see with Atrus, the D’ni blood runs quite strong (his age, among other things), so I think that it’s safe to assume that gehn, who has much more d’ni blood than atrus, has eyes very similar to a tru blooded D’ni.

• Thestrangeredreply

Magic: I’m not even sure there’s a point to discuss what’s true here, according to canon. It’s been confirmed and mentioned several times that the D’ni had thin, pale pupils. It may not make sense scientificly, but they you never know. Beside, no one ever complained about the scientific side of the eyes and many thought it was very cool.

And what can be a better example than, again, Aitrus pic in Riven? he is 100% like most characters of the book, and he has thin and pale pupils. Why turning to half D’ni, whose eyes may not be D’ni eyes (beside, gehn is smoking a pipe with who knows what’s in it, it’s very much likely his pupils will be big), when you have a pic of a character from the book, a 100% D’ni, and several mentions of the D’ni thin and pale pupils (if I remember correctly, and I think I do).

Take a look at mystlore’s “d’ni (race)” article. You can trust that whatever in mystlore is canon.

• I agree that Aitrus’s picture is a better example of D’ni appearance, but to me his pupils look like ours. Does anyone else agree? MYSTlore says only that D’ni pupils are pale, not narrow or large. Thestrangered: I would appreciate a citation of one of the quotes you remember from the books to relieve me of my doubt.

• The eye situation has been discussed with great detail by those of us at MFG, but I suspect you’ll have to watch the movie to see what we end up with :) .
That picture of Aitrus provided in the link above bothers me though. The D’ni lifespan is on average 365 years and many regularly lived over 400 years. However, Aitrus was only 88 years old when he died, he was still very young by D’ni standards. He hadn’t even lived 1/4 of his life yet; in human terms he was under 18. Of course in maturity he was far above that but his body was still very young. That picture from the link makes him look like a 90 year old civil war vet, and is completely inaccurate and silly to me. Trust me we are not getting someone who looks 90 to play Aitrus :D

• @ Isaac T. – I’ve always had the same problem with that photo. The reason he looks like a civil war vet is because the photo it was based upon is of Benjamin Huger, a civil war Confederate general. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Huger_(general)

• I had to laugh at Isaac’s ironic comment about the civil war veteran. Haha.
_
I remember when the thing with Gehn’s face in the Riven book at the beginning of Riven was explained, something was said about him having the slightest resemblance to D’ni’s think pupils. Just saying…

• As far as the book goes, I’m not sure how much of it we can take as cannon, and I haven’t read it a several years so I’m not really qualified to judge what is and isn’t cannon, although I am aware of the location situation.
As far as the movie goes, the guys have already stated that they are departing somewhat from the established cannon, so if they want to go with the scientifically accurate approach, or stick with the book, or do something completely different, I don’t really care, as long a I get to see it!!

• Good catch Deius! Those two photos are the same, seems like we need to update the Myst Lore site :) (Maybe we will when we have our actors nailed down.)

• We’ve been deceived! Aitrus didn’t die in the Fall; instead he lived on to take part in the American civil war! And he was on the pro-slavery side! :O Atrus will surely have to spend several years in therapy when he finds out about this. No wonder Ti’ana hid it from him!

• Thestrangeredreply

You should get Major Benjamin Huger for Aitrus part!

>_<

Yeah.

Anyway, I noticed the age problem too. And that’s why I said: at least keep the beard. You obviously won’t get an actor that age since it’s a mistake by developers, but the Huger’s beard is very nice and I can see it fitting in with a younger actor.

As for the pupils, maybe when they said “pale” they didn’t talk about the color, but about the eyes being weak?
:O

What do you want? I’m trying, I’m trying!

• So anyway where’s Patrick? It’s been two weeks since we heard from him! *baits fishing rod with a venti vanilla frappuchino*

• I nominate Thestrangered for president of F.A.B. (Fans of Aitrus’ Beard). They even have a rally song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe3Vsbsb33Q By the way, it wasn’t me who caught the Aitrus/Huger photo thing. someone else posted it somewhere years ago. I just happened to remember it. :)

• What would the movie’s costuming be like? (A serious question with a not so serious answer) Hmmmm… Contacts, lots and lots of Cat eye contacts. Men: Funky beards, sombreros and Aengsam. For that montage of 10 year-old Veovis and Aitrus’s school days: mini funky beards, sneakers and togas. For D’ni women… Hmm… Hula skirts, ballet shoes and Durumagi. Thrown in some outfits from the middle ages to spice things up. :-)

• Thestrangeredreply

BTW for anyone who couldn’t notice I’m usually known as “the stranger”, I just changed my name. And I think I’ll change also at MOUL forums.

• Mmm…costumes. I absolutely LOVE designing costumes for conventions, movies, Renaissance Fair…man, I would love to design I few costumes for Myst XD

• Nestor Carbonell as Aitrus… then we can all argue if he wears eyeliner.

• Hahaha…that is always how I refer to him. “He’s the mayor from Dark Knight, you know, the guy who looks like he’s wearing eyeliner?” Also in Lost, but most of my friends don’t watch Lost. *tear*

• Lost rocks Sylanya good taste! *pat on the shoulder*

• Seriously, if we don’t get an update I’m going to call South Bend police to look for missing persons.

• OMG! Nestor! I love love love him. Don’t get me started… lol! He’s no Aitrus though, lmao!

• Obviously A+P are waiting for me to post before we get an update. So here I am.
