For The Press - A Project Summary

Jul
29

We’ve now come to the point where we are sending out that press release I mentioned a while back:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Legendary “Myst” Title Optioned to Hollywood Newcomers

South Bend, Indiana – July 29th, 2009 – Mysteria Film Group, LLC (MFG), an independent production company, has acquired the option to the novel, Myst: The Book of Ti’ana, for the development of the property into a major motion picture. The Filmmakers completed the script earlier this year and began unofficially shopping the project to major film studios last month.

MFG, based in South Bend, Indiana, began as a grassroots effort by two filmmakers. Even Cyan Worlds, Inc., the parent company of the Myst franchise, was not aware of their efforts for some time. “We began our adaptation without the rights,” says Adrian Vanderbosch, a Director and Producer with MFG. “It was risky and unorthodox, but we knew we would prove ourselves to Cyan with a solid blueprint of our vision for the film.”

After multiple failed game-to-film adaptations of Myst by industry leaders, Mysteria Film Group came up with a fresh approach to reinvigorate the franchise. “Our vision for the feature film found its source material not in the games, but within the deeply engrossing novels released as backstory. This provides a literary pedigree to the film adaptation,” explains Vanderbosch.

As a fantasy-themed book with its roots in the gaming world, Myst: The Book of Ti’ana finds itself planted squarely in the middle of two major Hollywood trends. “The success of film franchises like The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia have laid the groundwork for general audience appeal in the genre of fantasy, while the astronomical revenue streams in the video game market offer studios significant incentive for game-based cinema,” adds Patrick McIntire, also a Director and Producer with MFG.

The adaptation of the book garnered significant attention after Myst ’s creators endorsed the project. In January of 2008, a production blog was launched, offering an opportunity for fans to follow the journey Myst will make from legendary game icon to major motion picture. Viewership of the website, mystmovie.com, has expanded at an average of thirty percent per month. It now boasts 30,000 unique page views and 130,000 subscriptions to the blog’s RSS feed monthly.

The original Myst title was one of the first PC CD-ROM games ever developed and was lauded by critics and gamers for its groundbreaking technical achievements, engaging storytelling and unprecedented graphics. Myst quickly became the world’s best selling PC game of all time – a title it held until finally being supplanted an impressive nine years later.

In the last two years, the original title has seen a resurgence with a port to Nintendo DS, Playstation Portable and, most recently, the iPhone. Within one week of its release on the iPhone application store, Myst achieved status as one of the top five best selling paid applications.

The rediscovery of this legendary game has gone a long way to validate MFG’s efforts. Once a long-shot, the Myst motion picture project has defied the odds and promises to be an exciting debut for a burgeoning production company.

“This option is a major victory,” concludes McIntire. “Cyan has placed a lot of faith in us, and we have no intention of letting them down.”

Yay, nice one. Describes your adventure in a brief but fairly precise form.
I think i’m damaging the chairs in my house, constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for more news. Cannot wait for more info.

Oh that will get you guys more attention so you can find help to make the movie!

But I’m confused, it says there have been multiple failed game to film adaptions. So someone has already tried to do this?

Mister Cloak
Jul 29 2009

OMG! NAO EYE KAN SCHEND JOO PHAN MALE!

Seriously…you guys rock…like nara. <.< And I wasn’t aware that Myst was the first cd-rom game…wasn’t there that sega add on and wolfenstein and doom? I think Atari might have also had something too…

Am I the only one getting this really strong urge to send something? Must.. think of something… that justifies stamp cost…
Now tell us about the aforementioned movie please.

Aaaw. You deserve hugs. ^_____^

The Manhole was probably the first CD-ROM game ever released. 7th Guest was probably the first prominent CD-ROM-only game. Myst was, however, the “killer app” for the CD-ROM drive.

DUDE, WTF MAN. It has been frikin years and this movie is no where near even started. I think by the time the movie is out no one will care about Myst anymore or all the die hard fans will have died from old age. I’m DYING MANNNN. Just let MYST rest in piece.

What company/studio is backing the film?

This is strangely familiar.
_
But, as long as you say so, yaaaaaaaay press release!

Ryan S. Davis
Jul 29 2009

I’m a bit confused. I was under the impression you already had the option on the book, so this doesn’t sound like “news,” per se.

“But I’m confused, it says there have been multiple failed game to film adaptions. So someone has already tried to do this?”
-
See here: http://en.mystlore.com/wiki/Myst_movie
It doesn’t look like many got very far, but there were previous attempts which all failed.
-
But anyway, on the main topic, :D !

Since this is the “appetizer”, I imagine the “entree” will come shortly.

This may seem like old news to you guys, but it’s not. This press release reflects a signed option agreement with Cyan. Up until now, we have been working under a verbal agreement with Rand. Both parties signed a written contract and made it all official.

Well that’s nice and shiny!

Well well well, nice job guys. The written option is a nice little thing to have under your belt right now. I hope everything with the studios has been going well, just give us a little information here and there where you can, thanks mate.

Wonderful, thanks for the news! :)

Oh that explains things. Thanks Gloa!

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
This is very uplifting to hear! :-)

It seemed like old news indeed, so thanks for the clarification. Great that it’s official now and that the world will know about it! And I can’t wait for the “entree”.

Mister Cloak
Jul 30 2009

I still have a problem with the sentence “The original Myst title was the first CD-ROM game ever developed…” because this statement is false. As groundbreaking as it was this is just one milestone it didn’t achieve. Please, for your sake, change this sentence. Also, my sanity kind of hangs in the balance of this false fact too…

don’t ask me why though because I haven’t got a clue.

So what’s for dinner?

“Since this is the “appetizer”, I imagine the “entree” will come shortly.”
-
I hope it’s a four course meal, with the “salad” coming soon, then the “entree” and then the “desert”, all made of very awesome and cool pieces of new exciting information. :D

Nah… we haven’t gotten our drinks yet! :D

@ MisterCloak - Perhaps it could be clarified to first PC CD ROM game, since there were already CD ROM consoles and titles being sold when Myst was released. As for PC games, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom both pre-dated Myst, but were not released in CD-ROM format until after Myst was.

Not the first on PC either. The Manhole, also by Cyan, was the first CD-ROM game on the PC. Myst was the first succesful PC CD-ROM game though. ^_^

Congratulations on getting the signed option agreement, guys! Perhaps your press release should be reworded to reflect that distinction.

…began unofficially shopping the project to major film studios last month.” So, if all this current flurry of activity related to pitching your script isn’t official, what would be involved with an official pitch effort?

I’m so excited about the movie. Even more now about the press release. This means it’s going to actually happen. I’m one of those die-hard fans that dreams of this and waits forever for it to come true. Good Job EVERYONE! Make it brilliant! I love the books more than the games!

Guys, I have something for us to work on to pass the time for a little while.
The MYSTlore wiki article for “Myst: The Motion Picture” is woefully out-of-date. Why don’t we put our heads together and flesh it out a bit, hmm?
-
http://en.mystlore.com/wiki/Myst:_The_Motion_Picture

Are people still having trouble seeing this page? I thought I had fixed the issue… Let me know.

*reads the press release*
Oh, has the PSP port finally been released here? I bought it back in July ‘07 on a trip to Scotland. 15 quid at a chain store whose name, IIRC, was, honest to God, “Game”.
Lol. “Quid.” Oh you silly, silly Brits. At least we had the common sense to nickname our money something that makes sense, like “bucks.”

Wait a second…
-
*reads the MYSTlore page*
You guys were thinking Bear McCreary for a possible composer? You know, if you were, I would agree with you. That would actually be pretty cool. I can see his style of music fitting this movie quite well.
OH DUDE THINK OF WHAT THE MYST THEME WOULD SOUND LIKE.
THUMBS UP!

Yeeeeah the trilogy should have a signature theme like Harry Potter has Hedwig’s Theme. That would be so epic!

What about Jack Wall? Haven’t you heard Video Games Live?

Congrats guys. You’ve earned it. :)

Adrian: Unable to view this page with IE 6 but it works fine with Firefox.

So happy for you guys! :)
And all of us fans.

I always use Firefox myself, but I tried to load it in IE and it won’t fully load. I didn’t notice any other problems for the quick browse… just this topic thread seems defunct.

Whoo! Way to Go you guys! Can’t wait for dinner when i can gouge myself on MYST. Well Done for hanging in there. I’m pre-booking a ticket for the movies as we speak.

IE 6 is an outdated browser that is no longer standards-compliant, and is the bane of many a developer’s existence. I suggest switching to Firefox, Safari or Opera - or if you insist on using IE, upgrade to a newer version.

I actual spoke to Jack Wall at BlizzCon 2008 last year and mentioned the Myst Movie and he seemed quite interested in the project.

apologies for the issues in viewing this page. I think I’ve got it all fixed now. It took a few days because we’ve been really busy.
_
IE sucks, by the way!

Indeed it does!

Having just heard Bear McCreary’s music this weekend, I HEARTILY endorse him as a composer. Should we start a cheezy internet petition?

BTW, Mysterium is kicking much ass this year so far… I’m thinking we’ll need to hold a future Mysterium concurrent with the summer blockbuster release of MMBoT

Good job, P&A.
.
No, not getting the page fixed (but good job anyway). Good job officially getting the Option.

Anyway, any progress which we don’t know about?

Keep this in mind: We lack the power to reach any potential configuration of matter in the universe with a penstroke, but we have free reign over the aural ones. One can create worlds. You should.

Congrats, guys! Another step forward :D

Aug 01 2009

Eleri: That’s a good idea. Mysterium could be timed so that the last day happens right before the movie is released. Maybe Mysterium could offer a midnight showing. Won’t that be cool? :-)

This has got to be one of the most difficult sits to navigate and get information from… What is going on here? Is there any information of value that someone can provide on Myst, Riven, Exile, Etc. This site makes little sense….

I’ve become so bored lately that I’ve taken to watching Flash collabs on Newgrounds.
Somebody do something entertaining.

Aug 02 2009

Has anybody found any really good Myst fan vids on Youtube? I’ve always liked the fake trailer videos.
-
I wish there was a way for all of us Myst fans to get to know each other better. The Myst fanbase is full of such interesting people and so far the only way has been Mysterium. But what about us poor fans that can’t make it?

Flowerpower
Aug 02 2009

Blackmesaboy: Someone did do a cartoon interpretation on BoT on Youtube. Basically it’s a parody.
-
Dr. Worm: Time for the 1st annual Myst movie commenting improv. Winner receives nothing. It’s a life and death battle for honor!!! :-) A, P, I or N go first.

Rand said at Mysterium that he wants a cameo drinking coffee in a cafe, and he can say “Bring me the donuts” in D’ni

J: It’s not difficult at all….this site is about a movie….based on a book….

… which is set in the same universe as a game serie.

Hurrah — that’s good to see. :)

Eleri: AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Aug 03 2009

That was fantastic guys! congratuations!!!! I have to admit though… when I read the part that talked about the posts and the people being able to comment, I couldn’t help but giggle to myself and say “Tee-hee, I did that!”
:patrickjudgingface:
-
On the subject of composers, I’ve been talking about that for ages! Jack Wall would be epic because he worked on Exile and I think he worked on Revelation. Bear McReary (I spelt it wrong! please forgive me!!!!) is a good composer who I think is more fitted to a project like Myst than he was for BSG. I mean, he did good. But I think his music is more fitting for Myst. And finally, I think that Rand needs to oversee all the composing…. that’s just me. 8)
-
And on the subject of game consols for Myst, I had this crazy idea that I think would work really well. Can anyone imagine the Myst games being made for a game system like the Wii? I mean, the clasic point and click? And then you could re-configure them like real-myst was to make them even better! Just imagine how epic that would be. Well, that’s what I think anyway.
-
Once again guys, congrats!

blackmesaboy
Aug 03 2009

Thats a great idea myst fanatic! I’ve always wondered why they don’t make point-and-click games for the Wii. Or port games like Myst and Command and Conquer over from the PC. The Wii pointer would be perfect as a mouse!
-
My opinion for a composer would be Jack Wall. He’s already done the music for the games and we loved it so why not have him continue? He knows the series and would know what to do for the movie. I’d hate to see someone new come onboard and fail to capture the feeling of the series for the music.
-
And congrats guys for getting this far with Myst! :)

Thestrangered
Aug 03 2009

My opinion for composer is Jack Well, with the help of Robyn Miller and Tim Larkin. The whole Myst music family! that would be awsome :P .

Thestrangered
Aug 03 2009

I meant Jack Wall. oh well (hehe, get the joke? oh well-jack well, hehe. Yeah, it isn’t funny :\ )

The last three would also be great for the Wii, with the whole 360 degree thing. Of course they’d have to cut out the timed puzzle on Spire because that’s just not happening.

I’m sure you guys already know, but IGN has posted a news article about your press release!

http://movies.ign.com/articles/101/1010333p1.html

Congratulations!

Andy: DOWN WITH THE SPIDER CHAIR!!!!! I mean, I like a good puzzle that makes you think for a while, but COME ON!!!! and then, the bit of information ytou get afterward is crucial to solving the game is scrambled every time you play! so youc can’t even look it up on the internet at a last-ditch-effort to finish the game. It just…. GRRRRRRRRAH! *ends angry rant* so yea, i’d have to agree.

Man.. this is so friggin suhweet. I am insanely excited. Too bad this is before the time of the first Myst game, or else I could play Achenar perfectly. :) Hehehe.

After I have read all that was said, my eyes just plopped open wide like never before all the pain is gone and I now feel a sudden burst of awe explode inside of me! “What does this mean I ask myself?” Awe yes, and so it begins! Let it be, Let it be, Let it be, Let it be! Singing words of wisdom, let it be!

I still don’t know how we’re supposed to figure out the codes, but besides all that, trying to move those levers with a WII REMOTE? No way.

blackmesaboy
Aug 04 2009

Ummm, I cheated on the chair puzzle. I know. Thats bad. But I’m sure I’m not the only one!!!

I loved the spider chair… It was one of the few puzzles in the game where you really had to think and the connection to previous puzzles and the story of the age was great. Admittedly I did have some trouble before I found that one last paper with [vital clue] on it but yeah.. spider chair = awesomeness.

Adrian: sweet! Have you done any shopping for acting yet? Who’s backing the movie? new line, paramount etc… Oh and if you are looking for an actor for atrus, don’t use the guy who played him from myst 4! LOL.

No comments for this in sep? Wow. Either way. I hope to see more!

The same actor played Atrus in all the games… Rand Miller, the co-creator of the games and co-author of the books. Major diss there

I could totally see this being a DreamWorks film. Those people know how to make fiction come to life. I only hope that some studio will pick up on it quickly and help infuse Cyan with the money they need to get back to doing what they do best…taking us all to D’ni. Good job guys. Good luck.

Well done you guys! Your perseverance will be rewarded. Stick to your dreams, stick to your standards. Be patient and maintain your high production values. It will pay off in the end. :o)

Good luck with this. I have always believed the Myst books would make a great basis for cinema. Indeed,”The end has not yet been written.”

This game is some piece of work. Love the extreme graphics…:)..:)

Shorah!

Seriously can’t wait for this. As a vivid collector of Myst items, I’ll be buying every edition. All boned out waiting for this to come to life. It really saddens me how Cyan has always been given the short end of the stick, the team is truely brilliant. URU, the first time I played, it totally sucked me and kept me glued to my pc with amazement. I’ve been gaming since the c64 era and no other game had me hooked as much as URU did. Still to this day, nothing has matched it (Myst IV came close which I still have to finish and then I’m going to play 5 so maybe 5 will). Sure The Longest Journey (which I just finished last year, I kept putting it off), Dreamfall, Syberia 1 and 2, and others were great adventures but nothing comes close to how adventures are to be made.

Would I get to pay to see this Movie

I have played every game and own the 3 novels in hardbound. They are spectacular. I am so excited to see this come out in the theaters. Ever since I finished Book of D’Ni, I felt the whole series could really be a blockbuster hit. I sure hope they have a professional linguist to help bring the D’Ni language and book-world languages alive.

Something in the style of “Avitar” would be cool at this point. 3D realism and story would make it profound. There were things in the movie Avitar that kind of reminded me of the game “Myst”

I hope it start to delevopeding and filming very soon

debra, download a windows 98 emulator.

i would so see this movie!

Feb 24 2010

a great thing is happening here, i hope to see the world of th D’ni soon, hoping my minds eye has gotten all the details of the D’ni from the books as correct as can be!!

“Something in the style of Avitar would be cool at this point.” I think that what we would like (best-case scenario, obv.) is something with the digital magicfest that was Avatar, but with an actual, non-anvilicious plot (sorry to those who liked what little characterization there was in Avatar). The “3D realism” also mentioned by Carlo would be especially breathtaking, even if you digitally replicate model city blocks as mentioned on a previous post.

Off-topic: Now that you’ve mentioned it, Carlo, Pandora did seem to be a lot like Haven (of Revelation), expanded into a planet. There’s black camoudiles, giant armored zeftyrs, and a green monkey population (forget the names of the monkeys in Revelation). Of course, there was no intelligence spreading through Haven’s roots, and contrived plot points were hard to come by as well, but I see the similarities now that you mention them.
