For The Press - A Project Summary

Aug
05

Well, we had another long night of hard work at Patrick’s.  We’re doing all kinds of secret neat things right now.  All of them designed to help bring the Myst movie to a theater near you.

During a brief break, Patrick took the time to load up the video of Rand’s Q&A at Mysterium.  We had a good time watching it and wish we could have been there.  It was cool to see him talking with the fans about our project and how much trust and faith he has in us.  It really meant a lot and we were all smiling ear to ear.

Thanks to the fans for keeping Myst alive!  Thanks to Rand and Cyan for helping us give it new life in the cinema!

I’m going to bed.

From Zib’s blog: “Also, please don’t directly link to the video file”

Thanks, realXCV. I didn’t see that. It’s taken care of.

Still not sleeping?

According to the video, it seems that Rand only recently discovered the meaning of the word “options”.

Someone, please enlighten me about the Mysterium as it pretains to Myst. I know the word only as the unfinished magnum opus of composer A. Scriabin.

Worldsurfer
Aug 05 2009

I meant “pertains.”

Worldsurfer, Mysterium is a Myst fan convention. They sometimes hold them in Spokane, WA near CyanWorlds headquarters, and sometimes Cyan employees are involved.

Agh! Of course the video is HUGE file and I’m stuck with a dial-up connection! :( Thanks for sharing though. Does anyone possibly have a transcript of it?!

Ah man! Angela, you and i have the same curse…. stupid dial-up. I wanted to see rand talk about the myst movie! *Pouts* :( *tear*
-
I really, REALLY wish I could afford to go to Mysterium. I mean, hearing about all the cool stuff the people there get to talk about. And then some lucky ducks get to meet Rand!?! Not being able to go breaks my heart. :(
-
but really, Patrick/Adrian, if you can somehow stream that video to a format Angela and I could see it, I’d be extremely grateful. I’d buy you cookies (*People in the background start screaming “NOT THE COOKIES AGAIN!!!”)

The cookies are the entree.

Does anyone have a transcript of the interview? I noticed they had some BoM information in it…

blackmesaboy
Aug 05 2009

Hey I just moved to Washington! Mysterium here I come! Uhh, when is it?

@Angela and myst fanatic: Same here with the dial-up. I’ve been meaning to switch but haven’t yet due to a combination of being lazy and a cheap bastard. We have high-speed at work but of course they block streaming video and most anything cool so I haven’t seen any of the videos. Maybe they can put them all on DVD for us.

@blackmesaboy: I’m thinking you just missed it. Sorry dude, maybe next year.

Dial up stinks! Unfortunately there’s not anything available that is better other than paying ludicrous amounts for HughesNet or something. :( I was sooo close to going to Mysterium this year, but I gave up on the idea because I wouldn’t have been able to afford the flight (even though I have a voucher to use by 10/31.. I’d still have to pay $150 + the difference) and hotel because I got fired from my job last month. Soo… Mysterium didn’t happen for me. I vote for a transcript, please! :)

Rand wants Jeremy Davies for Aitrus, yay!

Does anyone have a transcript of the interview? I noticed they had some BoM information in it…

Yeah, the “information” consisted of this: “We’d really like to finish it when we get time. There hasn’t been any progress on it.”

I’m just glad they’re still acknowledging it. That’s not a very common thing. Good old Cyan Worlds ^__^

I have high-speed internet and I still can’t watch it! I want to know about The Book of Mirram! And I missed Mysterium! Dang it!

Look on the bright side, guys, this website is like a 24/7, 365 days-a-year Myst online convention… call it: imyst ;-)
What I’m waiting for though, is holographic tech to improve (think the holodecks on Star Trek) Then when all is ready, Myst becomes hologram. Now that would be epic!!!!!!!

blackmesaboy: Globally it’s: no progress on The Book of Marrim.
-
Dialupers: The movie is making Rand loose his brown hairs faster.

Rand wants Jeremy Davies for Aitrus, yay!
Objection! I called Jeremy Davies first!! Is Rand Miller drooling over him? No I didn’t think so…

Rand wants Jeremy Davies? Does this mean we can assume that Rand watches Lost?

He specifically said: “I want that guy on Lost. Faraday”

Hi, I just stumbled upon this blog a few weeks ago. I, like a few other people I’ve read posts from, had my own dreams of one day adapting the Myst novels into films myself. If I remember correctly, I started reading them in high school-although it could’ve been middle school-I can’t quite remember. I was just thinking I couldn’t have gotten into it before high school because I didn’t have a computer until 2000, but then I remembered OH YEAH, but I had a PS1 back then and that’s how I got into Myst and Riven! So yeah, it could’ve been probably around seventh or eighth grade. I’m pretty sure I actually read Ti’Ana first-inadvertently, not knowing that there was another book published before it.
Anyway, I’m not sure if this has been asked before-but do you imagine there possibly being trouble with Hyperion, the publisher of the books? Technically though, looking at the copyright section the”text and fill” are copyright of Cyan, with the only notice regarding the publisher itself being “No part of this book may be reproduced…blah, blah, blah… without the written permission of the publisher,” I’m sure that’s just the technical mumbo-jumbo you see written in that particular section of just about any book. I’m still just a bit curious about it, though.
I’d also like to say that I do think an adaptation of the book could work as a mini-series, I personally thought Dune (although not quite so much Children of Dune) was done pretty well and had some descent production values. However, Myst would likely at the very least require a good deal more different types of set pieces with different ages and such. Also, since it would be adapted for TV, the narrative structure would probably have to be altered radically-for instance always having some kind of “cliffhanger”-type moment just before a commercial break, and giving each “episode” it’s own more or less independent story arc. So ultimately I’d say the film route would be better and I’m sure you’ve considered all this already and you seem dead set on doing it as a film and NOT as a miniseries, and I agree it would be better in the end.
Anyway, good luck.

Jeremy Davies?! I’m having a hard time imagining him as Aitrus. He seems too… small? I love him as an actor and I had a gleeful fit when he joined Lost and was throwing stuff at my tv during the last couple of episodes this past season! On that note… it would make sense that he watches Lost; it is about islands with loads of great mysteries to solve, lmao! :) I’m an obsessed fan who has been addicted since the pilot episode. Yup. Moving on now…

Oooh, I can see Davies as Aitrus… oooh *starts daydreaming wile munching on cookies*

Awesome. I just saw the video. I’m glad Rand has such trust in you guys. I can’t wait to see the movie when it comes out.

Mister Cloak
Aug 07 2009

ah, yet another mysterium I was too poor to attend. Mysterium brings up all sorts of bad emotions for me as the one I was going to attend got moved to a different city just because gametap cancelled MOUL and I think that was a stupid reason to move the event to another state. Oh well. Anyway, glad to see things are still moving along. I’ll go mope somewhere else now.

blackmesaboy
Aug 07 2009

Was Mysterium in Spokane? I could have gone because that isn’t too far a drive from here. I didn’t because of poor planning on my part. :( Well theres always next time. Hopefully it will be special with the movie being pretty close to release or having already been released by then.
-
Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be heading off to see a movie of my favorite childhood action figure. Oh the memories! :)

Lostthyme
Aug 07 2009

Hahaha… that video is great. I nearly died laughing when Rand was talking about the slider puzzle. I think we can officially say that no one likes that part. Rand put it perfectly. “I’m at the first part, and even I don’t want to play anymore!”

Maybe someday I can go too. :(

Stupid Quicktime! I waited 20 minutes just for it to tell me I need to update to watch the video! And then I go to update only to have them tell me I need to pay to download! :( Can anyone help me? Or at least tell me what happened? :)

Herohtar
Aug 08 2009

@blackmesaboy: QuickTime is free, but you should use VLC anyway. :P

Worldsurfer
Aug 08 2009

The talk of online Uru saddens me. Concerning Myst, I missed the only missable opportunity.

Next years Mysterium is in Minneapolis… start thinking about it now!

Static Jones
Aug 08 2009

Haha.. I didn’t know Rand was so funny… “Bring me the doughnuts.”

@Herohtar: I agree! VLC rocks!

Rand wants Jeremy Davies? Does this mean we can assume that Rand watches Lost?

JJ Abrams is a fan of Myst, and Rand Miller is a fan of Lost. It kind of makes sense in a cyclical sort of way.

Thanks for posting a link to the video and congrats on the glowing endorsement! It’s great to hear Rand’s personal take on the movie project as well as the rest of the D’niverse. Also, it was a real treat to watch the panel of characters from Uru (and the creative & talented people who brought them to life). I found it fascinating and illuminating. I did find the Uru related discussion bittersweet though. It is so frustrating to hear about all the projects and ideas on the back burner due to Cyan’s lack of resources. So, I guess what I am saying is that it is all on your shoulders, dear Mysteriacs, to make a kick-ass movie, revive the franchise, create lasting recognition for yourselves and Cyan, thereby saving the D’niverse and - by extention - Cyan Worlds itself. Oh, and could you possibly do something about world hunger? No pressure.

I love you Deius, lmao!

Jessica Adams
Aug 09 2009

Deius, rock on!

JJ Abrams is a fan of Myst, and Rand Miller is a fan of Lost. It kind of makes sense in a cyclical sort of way.
Or an evil plan kind of way. By the way, who are you? I can’t remeber that I’ve seen you before. :p

What’s with all the long hair in a ponytail going on in the video ?

Is this an American thing…..or have all the good hair stylists moved away ?

Or is it an attempt to try and look young and hippy like ?

The strange thing is that it ages Rand something terrible….get a decent hair cut youz guys !

Obviously I’ve got far too much spare time on my hands……..

Herohtar
Aug 13 2009

@David G: It’s a Rand thing… that was the hairstyle he has had most of the time and he became known for it among the Myst community, and that is my guess as to why he keeps it. As for everyone else… I think a lot of the fans are trying to imitate him. :P

Don’t copy the ponytail thing…..it’s a mistake !

Rand looked a hundred times better with the shorter hair he had in the videos for Myst Revelation.

….has a quick look at the videos on the Myst V bonus DVD……Yep, he looks better with a nice hair cut.

So is this hairstyle referred to in the community as a “Rand” ?

Would you go to the hairdressers and when the nice lady with the scissors says-

“What can I do for you today sir ?

You say - ” I’d like a Rand please”

The nice lady puts down her scissors…..picks up an elastic band….and ties up your hair with it ?

Hmmmmm…….time for a proper haircut me thinks !

I totally agree on the haircut. Only a few people can pull off a ponytail and Rand isn’t one of them. One time on tv I saw this guy with thick, dark brown, really well kept lustrous hair that made you melt when you saw it. Then they cut it off as part of a makeover. Waaaah!

Stop being so mean about Rand’s and everyone else’s hair. Sheesh guys, it’s their hair, let them decide how they like it. :P

No, no, no…..I’ve got too much free time on my hands here and feel the need to make a big deal over the hair thing.

Don’t get me started on people clothes next ……!

LOL
