Watch the Guild

A little over a year ago, Adrian came to me one evening to show me something he had heard about on NPR’s Fresh Air earlier that day.  It was something that I was very skeptical about when he first told me about it, but, because I had a little bit of remnant connection with it, it was related to the film world, and it was so darn funny — I ended up getting hooked and started following it pretty closely.

What am I talking about?  Felicia Day’s webseries The Guild.

How this webseries has grown over the last couple of years is pretty phenomenal.  Not only in its target, reach and popularity, but also in its root artistic and technical quality.  And as it, in many ways, is still independently financed by Day & Co. (regardless of the Microsoft licensing agreements), they are actively asking for the public’s support.

Apparently, during the last several months, Day has been working closely with Jed Whedon (of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and brother to Joss Whedon of Buffy, Firefly & Dollhouse) in developing a promotional item to push the popularity and reach of the forthcoming Season 3 of The Guild.  What resulted was the creation of a catchy pop single and music video that spoofs the latest dance track crossed with the world of MMOs — and it’s simply fantastic!

Last night, after another session of script editing, cuts and analysis, I showed Do You Wanna Date My Avatar to Adrian, Yale & Jason with the explanation of wanting to put a quick plug into the Myst blog.  Day and her team are asking for people to spend the $1 to purchase the track on either iTunes or Amazon — and I feel it’s well worth it.  Maybe not necessarily to own the track — but to instead offer support to a group that is learning, growing and showing the world how quality entertainment can exist and blossom outside of network television.

Haha. I just discovered The Guild not too long ago. The show is very creative and funny.

Felicia Day and Morgan Webb are the two girls every nerd has a crush on. :)

wow. signed up just to post this, being a long-time lurker. Two of my favorite franchises have just melded, Myst being one, and the Whedonverse the other. Made my day. Thank you.

  • I’ve been watching the Guild for quite some time now, despite not being a WoW player. I’ve had that freaking “do you want to date my avatar” song stuck in my head for weeks, its very catchy, lol

I’m a big fan of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long blog too.

If you like the Guild, you might like The Legend of Neil, a spoof of Zelda, created by Sandeep Parikh (Zaboo in the Guild) http://www.effinfunny.com/legend-of-neil

  • Bought both the single and video the day they came out. Then saw Day at blizzcon and laughed my ass off when some guy asked her if the carpet matched the curtains and she didn’t know what it meant.

  • I’ve never heard of this. I’ll watch it at home. Lol, “a little more than a year ago” used to be a long way away here…and I like pop.

    AdricTW…what DOES that mean???

  • Patrick strikes me as a “Vork.” *unlurks*

  • Andy, here’s a clue: the hair on the head are the drapes. I would explain it further but Americans are so iffy when it comes to telling teenagers stuff, I leave it to you to find the rest of the explanation in the urban dictionary if that isn’t enough. ;) (Man I feel old suddenly… :? )

  • Cool!

On a random note, did you hear Disney purchased Marvel?

  • Yes, miss Disney-hobbit, we heard. ;)

  • Never heard of it.
    Just read it.

  • So does this mean we’ll start seeing strange mix games like Kingdom Hearts? I can picture it now, a Wolverine-Goofy co-op brawler for the Wii. Or something along those lines. I’m too tired to think up something better. School starts tommorow and I need my sleep. And I’m in the middle of rereading BOT. *yawn*

  • Disney’s evil- they’re gunning for my re-ment collection. It’s retaliation. Ya’ see, many years ago my mom told Pinocchio, “Go to hell”. Dude probably made his nose into a… what do you call it, shank? And Cinderella is going to bust in brandishing stilettos of doom (now we know what happened to her glass “slipper”), Snow White is going to be chucking apple grenades into the windows, and then they’re going to take a quick photo op break (sans the carnage of course), Then Alice will join them. She’ll be the worst of all. She straps her victims to a chair and makes them watch Bambi. (Why did the mom have to die!? Why!?) Then to freak her victims even more she makes them watch her film. That movie is scary!!!! You don’t think it would be but Disney’s Alice in Wonderland is a true horror flick.

  • Ugh. I remember this game.Well, KatrAnna is gonna like that you put that link up.

  • YOU’RE A SADIST!!!

  • Wow, that was like the most random thing ever. XD

  • Geez. I like that game even less than I thought I would.

  • I have that game, I love it. =D I work at Disney World now!

  • Disney World – needs a myst themed ride. I’m thinking mine cart in Riven or something

  • Or the tram ride between islands from Riven. Loved those sequences when I was little watching my dad play!

  • The only problem with that is that there would be hidden mickeys in the ride- I doubt the Rivenese knew of Disney… or did they?
Seriously, they didn’t need Disney because they had their own lovable cartoon characters (drum roll please) Wahrky and Sunnie, and Ytramy and, and, and… who needs Disney when you got Gehny? He’s the creative genius behind Steam Sub Willie and he designed the Maglev ride of Realitytown (look for the hidden Wahrkys) ;-) Now he’s launching a kid friendly opera channel called the Gehny Channel. It’ll feature the Bahro brothers, iAchenar, Sirrus of Wizardly place, and of course Yeesha D’ni (school girl by day, singing sensation by night) ;-) Oh and the Suite Life of Katran and Catherine. :-)
Don’t be a fool, stay in school :-)
    (Don’t know why I put that…)

  • I’m either curious, or afraid to know what Flowerpower has been smoking. Licking ytrams again??

Had a IMNSHO flash of Brilliant Casting Idea yesterday. Peter Jurasik for Ae’geris.

  • Peter Jur– holy s***.
    Unfortunately, he’s retired.
    -
What does IMNSHO mean? I missed the memo.

  • Eleri: If you must know, I smoke term papers- there’s enough BS in that stuff to get anyone high. :-)

  • “What does IMNSHO mean? I missed the memo.”
    -
“In My Not So Humble Opinion” is what I’ve always heard it used for.

  • Rofl. I know what you mean Flowerpower. :) But with all the other stuff out there to get a buzz off of, why BS? ;-)

  • Wow, Flowerpower. That was amazing!

Off-topic: Since the internet channel is free now, I can check up on this from my wii!

  • They say the adrenaline is a natural high. Starting a term paper four hours before it’s due produces a lot of that stuff. Combine that with disgruntlement and wonderful BS is written. Finally, just before you turn in the Mona Lisa of all term papers, you laugh your A$$ off: who knew the story of Hamlet was really a business plan designed to sell morality pizzas ;-)

  • ooook. Well now I know. ;-)

  • It’s international Klingon Peace Day! (well, one should be started anyway) ;-) http://www.kli.org/tlh/phrases.html
    Everyone start “Serrum”-ing! :-)
Hopefully there’ll be a day where there will be a site for the D’ni language. Hopefully something like Rosetta Stone, etc. :-)
Ah, it’s good to have goals… and ice cream- good stuff… oh and Vulcans- great people… teddy bears are good too… cats, great creatures… Mario cart- legal road rage… curse your teacher only to find that they’re right behind you- not cool…
Myst withdrawals again T.T Anyone else need a fix? “Borrow” the melody ;-)
“World destroyed. Soot deployed. Running from those maniacs. Powerful links, faster then light. Melodramatic Saveedro fights. Atrus, Catherine, The stranger, Yeesha, Cho. Oh I love Myst…”

  • Whats wrong with you?;-) Your parents didn’t drop you or anything did they?

  • Actually there’s quite a selection of pages if you want to learn the D’ni language.

  • I’m asking that in the nicest way possible of course Flowerpower. :) I know anime and college can affect your behavior (they have mine at least).
    -
Dang that looks hard to learn. I’ll stick to German as my second language thank you very much.

  • I will learn D’ni, but not until I am no longer learning French and German simultaniously.

  • Happy 9-9-09 day.
Is anyone going to see Tim Burton’s “9″ that came out today? Tim Burton always makes good movies.

  • Happy, happy, joy, joy, happy, happy, joy, joy… 9/9/09
Blackmesaboy: No, they didn’t drop me. But one of the great lessons you’ll learn, young grasshopper, is that it is better to just have fun- say what’s on your mind. :-D “life’s a banquet and some poor (bleep) are starving to death”

  • Hey, wait a sec, why is my comment dated the 10th??? It’s only 10:00 here.

  • Again I learn from one with a greater understanding of the world. I am humbled before you. :-D

  • And its only 10:00 here too! My computer even says its only the 9th!

  • Maybe it’s the site

  • The timestamps are based on the timezone we have selected for the site.

  • Well said Flowerpower.
Were you the person who interpreted dreams? I’ve been having a lot of dreams lately, and need someone to interpret them for me.

  • Andrew: Shoot away
    Adrian: ohhhhhhh… so that’s why

  • “The timestamps are based on the timezone we have selected for the site.”
    -
It’s a puzzle! Actually, probably not. It would be cool if it was, though.
