We’ve been terrible about updating this blog lately. Things have been so busy and we’ve been working so hard that the energy required to write a post just isn’t there very often anymore. Nevertheless, it is time to bring you guys up to speed.
I think I’ll start with Scorpio. We somehow managed to shoot an entire short film without even letting any of you guys know we were doing it. It has been mentioned passively on two occasions, but we never actual officially announced or talked about the project. That is clearly neglectful to our loyal readers. For that we apologize and wish to rectify this terrible wrong. So, now I’m officially announcing and talking about the project. It is a short film and it’s called Scorpio. We shot it at the end of July and it stars an amazingly talented and incredibly good person named Amanda Garant. Oh, and it also stars yours truly (in my first acting gig in 9 years). It’s a 5-7 minute short comedy that explores the selfishness people seem to so often display in a relationship. Sounds like a knee-slapper, right? Trust me, it’s funny. And sweet. And tragic. And honest. It’s got heart. Judd Apatow, here we come!
The purpose of the film was to have a solid reel piece to offer while we’re out there trying to convince the powers that be to let us make this really cool movie called Myst. Some of you may remember For Travis Preston, our last attempt at this task. Unfortunately, we realized that the resources and time necessary to complete that film were just not available. We went back to the drawing board and further developed the concept for Scorpio. The film was an idea we’d had in our heads for the better part of four years and when we realized our above stated limitations, it looked like the right time to get it in the can. Scorpio required two cast members, as opposed to the 22 required for F.T.P. When you consider the logistics of bringing in all of those actors, putting them up in rooms, feeding them, working with their schedules, etc. it becomes pretty clear that a two-character, 3 page script is a lot more doable.
So, we’re currently in post-production on the film and hope to have it done within the next month. That said, to all of you who donated money for F.T.P., THANK YOU and your money has not gone to waste. It was reappropriated to Scorpio and came in very handy.
Okay, on to other things…
As we stated recently, the script has undergone yet another cutting session. We managed to get it down to 164 ( a major victory in our book). I’m very happy to say that the results were pleasing. I still believe in the script and am convinced it is stronger for the cuts. Unfortunately, we’re not done yet.
A lot of our contacts in Hollywood have asked us to cut it further. We’ve made some great progress with some really important people, but no one is quite ready to commit to the project as is. They’d like us to trim just a bit more. As scary and frustrating as this prospect is to me, we’ll do what it takes to get this film greenlighted (and fight for our scenes later…maybe).
So, now we’re back in edit mode on the script. We’ve begun writing up an index card for every scene and posting them on a series of corkboards. Once we have the entire script “modeled”, we’ll begin looking at it as an object and see where we think the body is sagging a bit. Then, like a drunk plastic surgeon, we’ll hack and slice until it looks more like Britney Spears…or something.
Many more things I just can’t share with you all. I wish I could, but that’s all you get for now. I promise, we’re still working hard and there is still much more to come.
Until next time (hopefully not a month from now).
