For The Press - A Project Summary

Oct
10

First, dear readers, the essentials: my name is Isaac Testerman, and I joined the Mysteriac’s about 4 months ago. I came on board primarily as a producer, helping to take Myst into Hollywood and selling it to some large personalities. If you remember a while back, Nate and I came up with an idea for a booklet that talked about Myst, and our vision to see it brought to life in film. Once I was involved with the Mysteriacs, we all put our heads together and created a specialized presentation to put on the desks of those who make things happen. For the last few months I’ve been talking with production companies, producers, and studios, creating interest and excitement for BoT.

The response to our presentation has been amazing, and we’ve been able to talk and present our vision to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. We’ve learned A LOT in the last few months about what it takes to sell something to Hollywood; most especially that they love cuts. The script is still too long, and needs some restructuring before it will be green lighted. We’ve known this for quite some time, but had hoped more cuts could be made further down the road (once we have a team of writers and producers to help with the process). However, we’re realizing that in order to keep creative control we need to be the ones doing the restructuring of the script…which brings us to the present.

Our team has been talking about cutting the script for a long time now, and we’ve made leaps and bounds in that department. But what’s this–restructuring? During our many, many talks with Hollywood producers and executives it’s become clear that some core changes are necessary. While the core of the story and characters have been met with great acclaim, budget requirements require reaching out to a much wider audience than hardcore Myst fans. To reach the general audience (GA), we must do some restructuring by adding more action and suspense.

Know this: We are NOT compromising the story, or adding things that are not firmly grounded in the books and games. This is (and will remain) Myst through and through! As a matter of fact, we are making it more Mystish (is that a word?) as we go along. As a huge fan of Myst myself, I can assure you will not be disappointed!

“more action”? now i’m worried :( action is always nice… but can you tell us what sort of “action”? I sure hope it’s not big booms whenever it’s not needed :(

so yeah, can you give us an example?

I only hope that it doesn’t become something non-MYST but with the same title…

We will definitely not be just throwing action into the screenplay willy-nilly. That is something that dumb movies do, and Myst will not be, under any circumstances, a dumb movie. We’re looking for ways to integrate motivated conflict that will inspire the eye and push the story forward.

But as for an example of what exactly we’re coming up with? That’s just going to have be a surprise. :)

“The response to our presentation has been amazing”- Thats terrific! I’m so glad you guys have had a lot of positive feedback from Hollywood.

I’m ok with adding stuff to make it more accessible to the general audience. I know you guys will still make a great movie that the fans will love. :)

Well… I trust Myst fans to do a good Myst movie.

I would personally (and I bet most if not all of the Myst fans) would like to see more suspense than explosion-style action. Actually, I would like to see A LOT of suspense. So yeah, that’s my tip.

I know you’ve put your heart and souls into this, but… I can’t help but fear that this is the thin end of the wedge. Oh, it starts as a little bit of change, to open things up to a ‘wider audience’, but then you get Lord of the Rings… Ostensibly created by those who venerate the source material, but following it so loosely that in locations it fails to be recognisable.

Please… don’t let this be the thin end of the wedge?

Here comes the hard-sell…

Fine. Action it the hell up. Make Vin Diesel Aitrus. Make Megan Fox Anna.

Find some way to incorperate car chases, too.

Make it so that the books EXPLODE when you link. And instead of an illness that destroys D’ni, make it a bomb. A big bomb.

All joking aside…don’t screw up the story too bad when you “restructure” it, lol.

hehe animan… that was my first thought when he said “put more action”. Let’s hope it won’t really be that way :P

Story is and always will be the most important part! When I say more action I mean more than what the script has now; but there will be NO action for the sake of action, if you think about it, BoT has more than enough conflict to supply plenty of action. And BoT is the foundation for everything we are doing.

And I must say with Yale on our team there will be nothing dumb in our movies… ever.

I always knew Part 6 especially had the potential for heoric action, but there wasn’t much of that in the book IMO. Hopefully you guys can add it in in a way that will attract everyone (which I am confident that you will do!) :)

Megan Fox as Anna wouldn’t hurt either ;)

Yay, new post and new writers of new post
-
Remember, we’re fully behind you. Do the restructuring that needs to be done, but I’m confident the whole team will know what to cut, and add to keep to the story. You’ve kept this blog up enough to keep us, the Myst fans satisfied, so I know the team will come out with an exciting movie, but one that keeps to the Myst story line.

Keep on it!

Hope this movie will make us proud of that game we all bought that day!

I think I have an update…
-
Should I install it?

I hope the “then/than” thing can get restructured before some large personalities read this.

Jessica Biel as Anna!

@ Tada: Haha Adrian always makes fun of me for my then/than problems. It’s a good thing I’m not the writer of the group!

So long as the creators have this level of confidence in the project, I’m excited. Keep it up.

Wow (something explodes) congrats on the (a fight scene a la Matrix) post Issac :-) (Boom) It’s so (exploding car chase) good (explosions) to hear a (some famous monument takes a beating) new (KABOOM!) voi(BANG BANG)ce. This is (a litany of shouted swear words) very go(static)od news. Thank you (fight scene a la crouching tiger hidden dragon)
Has anyone seen this?

SELL OUT!!!

I hope it comes out well.
I have confidence in you guys.

Has anyone seen this?
Vague memory of it yes. :)

Flowerpower: Yeah I remember watching that a long time ago. Harry Potter is evil!

I’m not worried that Myst will be made into some silly movie that only tries to get their audience through action. I’ve read enough updates to be reassured of that! And a little action can always do some good. :D

Oooh! Two updates just for my birthday… woot!

What you’ve said really doesn’t come as that much of a surprise. I’ve joked before that I’ve been known to skip around he first 1/3 of the book… so it makes sense that even with the existing (magnificent, I’m sure!) script has to be adjusted. I’m confident that you guys won’t let us down! And if you do… we’ll just blame it on the monster that is Hollywood. :D ;)

Congratulations on your first official post, Isaac! *throws confetti*

Please forgive the cynicism of the audience. The collective consciousness has been dealt a severe blow by Transformers 2 in the name of action and, like Frodo’s wound, may never heal completely.

Adria, I remember telling you at the bux oh so many months ago, “You need to add some car chase scenes!” Prophetic words now huh! lol

Good.

Hey, the fact that there might be a movie at all is awesome. Some people don’t realize that film is an entirely different medium from a novel or game and thus scripts will have to be adjusted. It sucks when mainstream money determines the script as well, but it’s all in the process, and I trust you guys entirely.
