The last 2 months have been different from any other in Mysteria Film Group’s history. It’s been all business since our trip to California; establishing relationships with our new partners, dropping hints with the studio executives, and finding a legal team in LA to represent us through all the upcoming negotiations. It’s been an amazing learning experience as we navigate through the in’s and out’s of Hollywood, however through all this we’ve been missing something… the creative. It’s why we got into this; we love telling stories, especially through film. While the business side of things are exciting, (especially for me) the team as a whole has been itching to jump back into the story side of development.
Thankfully, last week we were able to get back to where our passion lies. Team MFG was able to have our first story meeting in a couple months and boy it felt good! Ever wonder what a meeting with the team looks like? Strap in, put your 3D glasses on and let’s go! First of all, if you’re a early bird you have no place in the meetings. We typically start about 9pm my time (west cost time) which means it’s midnight in South Bend, Indiana. Adrian has wrapped up his Starbucks shift and after a stop by Taco Bell he arrives at Patrick’s and Skypes Nate and I into the meeting. Yale, Jason, and Patrick argue about who gets camera time but in the end Adrian always puts his pretty mug in front of the webcam and the meeting begins. (What is it with actors and their desire to be seen?) I know most of you will post about how unhealthy this is, (remember how everyone got distracted here?) but the secret to the South Bend’s late nights is a constant supply of cigarettes. Nate and I have stayed clean so far but our partners smoke enough for both of us.
After a few stupid jokes and a good dose of Nate’s latest find on YouTube (he keeps us laughing) we’re ready to dig in. We surprise ourselves every night with our genius (especially Yale) and as we get deeper into development this story get’s better and better. Every time we run into a story wall, we’ve been able to work through it and have been the better for it. I’m so proud of what we’ve done and continue to do and I think this film will blow both the fans and the general audience away.
Off my high horse now and back to the meetings. Jason has been given the task of detailed note taking and he’s kicking ass. Each morning following a meeting we wake up to a new Word document on BaseCamp (our file sharing program) to review and chew over.
As the meeting progresses each of us have settled into our roles well; ideas get tossed into the ring, mulled over, laughed at, thrown out, rehashed, and a few stick. By the time we’ve agreed upon a story line or plot twist, it’s been through A LOT of checks and balances and is pretty solid. Even though there are 6 of us at work on this it falls together with ease (well most of the time) and I think it’s a testament to the strength of our team.
This usually last 2 or 3 hours and by the time we’re ready to wrap it up (because the cigarettes are running low) we’re all rejuvenated and pumped about what lies ahead. This is what we live for, this is the reason we’ve poured our time, money, lives, and energy into a project that most considered a fools errand. To see the Myst universe come to life with all the detail, character, depth, and passion that we felt the first time we stepped onto Myst Island or climbed into the cable car on Riven.
Our hope is that each of you will feel and see our drive for perfection when you sit down in a theater a couple years from now and step into the worlds we’ve had the privilege be a part of.
Until then, we will continue to put our heart in soul into this and hope for the best.
