All the News That’s Fit for Print

Car.  Road.  Cat.  Road.  Road.  Road.  Road.  Cat on lap.  Claws in knee.  Field, then back on road.  Road. Road…

And in other news that is truly awesome:

I promised you guys I’d let you know when something news-worthy happened.  Well, how does news from a news source suit your fancy?  Yep, that’s right, our partners have been announced to the world, and the project has been announced to the industry.  Now I can sit back and collect my millions…or not.

I suggest you guys do a quick IMDB search on these guys.   You won’t be disappointed.

We are honored to be working with such seasoned industry professionals on this project.  Their expertise is invaluable.  Add to that, they’re genuinely good people.

Unfortunately absent from the article is any mention of the guys down in the trenches with us on a daily basis.  Partnering with production companies like Roserock (Hunt) or Gran Via (Mark), means you will be dealing with developmental executives more frequently than you will with the producers proper.  Busy schedules make it impossible for Hunt or Mark to be involved in the day to day madness until the film actually gets set up at a studio.   They’ve hired guys to help shepherd their projects through the beginning stages.   Those executives are Cory Lanier of Roserock and Tom Williams of Gran Via.  They certainly deserve a shout-out for their hard work and dedication.

Okay.  Car.  Cat.  Road.  Road.  Road.  Road…

• Congrats on this milestone..so excited!

• Fantastic! Congratulations!

This is exciting news. Mark Johnson has an impressive number of good movies in his production repertoire.

• Exciting to hear! However, that article is quite painful.

One focus of the film will be the influence of a human who entered Myst and inadvertently brought down the civilization.” Um, no. Try “D’ni”, maybe?

Their description of the games didn’t go very well either…

• Myst produced by the producers of Donnie Darko and The World Of Narnia ? That’s great news !! It’s fun to read these news on the web and think “I knew this movie was being made for years!” – thanks to your blog.
Well keep up the good work !

• Well Done!!!!! Not too shabby on the partners guys. There is still a distance to go … but looks like that mossy stone is getting ready to roll. I did read the comments on the article which had their snarky moments — but I rack that up to players who never figured out the rocket maze OR are still trying to figure out how to get the elevators to work in Channelwood. On a more sympathetic note, Adrian I have travelled cross country with cats before. “I Feel Your Pain!” Again Gentlemen … Good On Y’all!!

• Ryan S. Davisreply

To all blog readers–please leave comments of support on that other site. I work for WB, and studio executives DO read that site. It’s rather influential in Hollywood. The more supportive comments, the more likely studios will be interested.

• I’m far from “not disappointed” — I’m thrilled!! Looking through their filmographies, I saw a LOT of titles that I love and respect. I’m really excited to hear that these two guys are on board. GREAT news, Adrian, thanks so much for sharing. Here’s hoping the rest of your trip goes smoothly (and involves less clawing). :-)

• This is great news guys!

I can’t say that article is great… but this is great! Plus this had a cat in it ;)

• I’ve been lurking for a while, but I’m still here… YOU GO GUYS!! Great and well-deserved news. brb spamming it to D’ni and back!

And yeah, leave it to anyone-but-the-most-hardcore-Myst-fans to botcher a summary of the series. We should make, like, a collection of these.

(Uhm. Due to the lurkage, I’ve been wanting to tell Patrick a big THANK YOU since July. Here it is, Patrick: THANK YOU. You helped lay the fondations for this. You’re part of this and will always be. Best of luck for whatever you’re up to now.)

• Mark Johnson? Excellent! I don’t know who Hunt is, but I’m sure that he’s just as excellent. You guys have some oomph behind this film and no mistake.

• That is awesome news! :) Any pictures on any signs left on the road to say ‘hi’ for you during your road trip so far?

• (spammed it to D’ni and back, btw. Messengers, LJ and official Uru boards except it was there already. Plus a couple of non-Myst-centric boards. Yaaaaaaaay!)

• Øystein Håvard Færderreply

These are great news! Myst being produced by producers of Donnie Darko and Rainman! Keep up the good wotk =D

• And now, cue comments like “Oh great, we get to watch someone pulling levers for three hours.” Even some articles are getting it wrong, saying that the movie will be based on the games or will take elements from the all three novels.

• Okay everybody — we can now check out Variety.com and look at the article there!! Evidentally good news travels fast!!

• ThedStrangerreply

Really exciting!

I don’t know much about the producers world, and I don’t really know if the producers are good with BoT sorts of films (if one of them did Narnia I guess it can’t be too bad), but it’s still great news.

If it turns out bad, we’ll be watching “The Last Airbender” cartoon-to-movie adaption…if it turns out good, we’ll be watching something like Lord of the Rings, or Inception. And I trust you to make an AWESOME movie.

Good luck! :D

• Fantastic news guys!
You’re a bit closer to this dream becoming a reality.

• So now we know who Cory is… :D

• Time to start re-tweeting and reposting this like my life depends on it. Well done, gentlemen.

Hmm. I don’t have much free-time now, but I should probably try to make a little blogpost. Not that… anyone reads my blog, but any exposure is good exposure, right?

• *happysigh*

• ThedStrangerreply

People are having hard time realizing the movie is based on the book, and not the game. I’ve seen everything from “they will bring the story of the stranger to the big screen” to “the movie will be based on the game, with several influences from the tie-in novels”.
It’s quite annoying, and it would be understandable, only that it’s bad for marketing. Everyone agrees that the game “Myst” is not suitable as a movie, yet the BoT is very very suitable.
This really needs to be stressed.

• So, um… several of the articles say a writer is being looked for?

• Leiai of the D'nireply

You have a cat–how adorable :)

• Wow! This is great news! :-D

Ryan, I’ve left a comment on that news site. I hope it helps. Some of the people who left comments were..well..how can I put it nicely? Stupid, ignorant and obviously didn’t even bother to read the article. I tried to put a balanced comment without attacking their opinions.

Anyway great news, I’m looking forward to the next juicy morsel :-)

Here’s Empires article

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=29071

• Gah! I’ve started to tableflip and comment on a lot of these news sources correcting the misconceptions, and I suggest you guys do, too. It may be a bit like whacking your head into concrete, but somebody has got to be listening. At the very least, note that it’s based on the book, not the game.

• Annoyingly enough, the post I made on the article linked in this post did not post my comment that was correcting people’s misconceptions and explaining what the movie actually is…

• @ Laughingpineapple: LOVED your post on deadline.com! You Go!!!

• Ryan S. Davisreply

It takes a while for comments to be approved at the source site. Mine was approved after several hours. So if you submit comments, just give it a little while to show up.

• Finally, after all these years of patient waiting, I now have substantial evidence to throw in the face of all my friends who all had said, “It couldn’t be done.”

“But it can be DOOOOOONE!” :P
-
But seriously, anyone who’s faithfully followed this blog has seen enough evidence of the Mysteriacs passion and pride for this project, and that this movie would get made somehow, someway. Maybe I’ll wait for that real golden-ticket word – greenlight – before I go on my gloat-fest.
-
Well, now we Myst fans (all 3 of us, as one article snarked) must be more vigilant than ever. We know the full potential of this franchise. And even though many people have made their minds up about a Myst movie one way or the other, it’s up to us few to sway the stragglers. So like Ryan Davis said up there, leave good, thought-out comments on these articles, and of course, spread the word! Tell a friend! Tell them the taaale… (lots of musical references today…)
-
Also, I’m gonna try to be more active on Uru Live now, in the Myst Movie Fan Core Bevin, especially during big news influxes such as these. Uru Live’s still free from Cyan Worlds, people! So feel free to come and hang with fellow Myst and film fans!
-
I’m absolutely giddy with excitement, but I’ll wrap up by ditto-ing laughingpineapple’s first comment. Big kudos to you, Patrick. This is all thanks to your vision, so wherever this movie takes us, I won’t forget where it all started. Thank you.

• Reading the comments on some of these sites is a bit encouraging. Many people, not just us, seem to realize the HUGE potential this movie has, and most seem to get that it is based on a novel, not the game itself.
-
Of course, then there are those idiots who didn’t get it, and want to see other games from that era, that have even less plot and almost nothing to reccomend them.

• So many pieces falling into place…the producer who had experience in world creation (Chronicles of Narnia), the infamous Cory. This be quite a big cookie! Anyway, here’s a screenshot of the Variety article in case you aren’t registered there: http://www.majhost.com/gallery/TheBohrok/Misc/varietymystmovie.jpg

• @Kaveman

Wohoo! Just don’t be eating any chocolate rivers anytime soon! :)

-

This is gonna be great. But I’m starting to wonder if Fox will be a part of this in anyway since the now unmasterious partners are know to be working on a movie at Fox. Just a thought. I’m sure a studio will pick this up soon. I just hope it’s sooner rather than later. :D

• @Trek — Now see here — we had Kave remarking on topic WITHOUT any reference to everlasting Gobstoppers, Riker vs. Han Solo and the difference between African and European swallows — and you had to bring up the chocolate river!! Tsk, Tsk, Tsk!! You need a mother very very badly!!!

It is very exciting to hear that one of the few substantive video game franchises (story not gory) is on it’s way to being a major motion picture. One hopes that the fans at the helm will do it justice. More so, I hope that the producers on board hold on to and respectfully translate the originality of the Myst franchise. The story and realism behind it captivated an immense number of first time computer gamers in the 1990’s and if the film can preserve the same style and the Miller brothers’ innovative take on interactive storytelling, I believe it will captivate a whole new audience, not all of whom would typically go for a video game movie.
That being said, I think it is important to not only praise you mysteriacs for taking up this torch, but also to hope that the film will live up to the standard set by Cyan over the years. To read C.S. Lewis and then go see the new Narnia films are incomparable experiences. Seeing fans like yourselves at the helm, I hope the movie will feel a little more authentic and like the games and novels, stand the test of time. Love and good luck.

• Here, Here Longtime!!!!

• I’m sure it’s been said already, but whoever wrote that article was obviously phoning it in. It’s like they didn’t even look at this site, they were just told “Hey there’s a movie being made about this thing called Myst, write an article” and then they did 2 minutes of research and pumped out another $20 for themselves.

The filmmakers will draw the plot from the mythology within the games, as well as a trilogy of companion novels Cyan Worlds published around them.
Wrong way around, makes it sound like the games are the major influence.

Players enter a highly atmospheric world and solve a series of puzzles that unlock secrets to this mysterious world. Players can liberate characters trapped inside of books, but have to decide which ones are good and evil. The goal of players was to return to Myst Island and rescue its owner from his imprisonment inside one of the books.
And we already forgot about the novels. None of this is relevant to the movie.

The novels provided clues to the backstory of the island the curious civilization known as the D’ni and the infinite number of worlds they could create and control.
Not even going to rip on grammar here. Clues? CLUES? The novels detailed out the entire story!

• Nye Sigismundreply

I just squee’d.

• Just my 2 cents…I hope the partners have taken a trip to Myst Online and experienced the city for themselves. Secondly, I hope they all have a copy of The Myst Reader in hand.

Personally, with all this news, I am now sitting on pins and needles waiting to see how they portray linking on the Silver Screen.

“A book is the ultimate travel agent, it can take you anywhere.”

• @Julia

Watch that YouTube video link to see what I mean! Lol! :D

• Amazing, this is the kind of “News” we’ve waited so long to hear! Yay!

• Was just thinking of this project the other day.

Initially, I didn’t give the idea of a Myst movie much thought. I’ve always been of the mind that most film adaptations of books (and video games, and various other media) fail because certain stories pan only be properly explored in the medium in which they are first written. Additionally, the task of creating the D’ni language and writing every single thing a member of D’ni speaks in that language struck me as too big of an undertaking to realistically expect. I concluded that all D’ni characters’ lines would be spoken in broken, hastily-thrown together D’ni, or just in English, and that irritated me.

I’ve since had a change of heart. Though I will likely put on my extra-big enraged-fanboy frown at however the D’ni language is handled, the rest of the story has a lot of potential, and I would be less irritated at a shoddy D’ni translation as I would at this entire project being skunked. And so I am glad to see that this project is finally on its way to becoming reality.

Go, Mysteriacs! Go! And whatever you do, don’t let Shyamalan write it!

The word is out – and it’s spreading! Sounds like you all are in great company.

Thank you! It may have turned out too long and I didn’t have time to check vocab or grammar, but at least it’s there… I also forgot to name-drop Mark J. P. Wolf for the academic studies or any of the big names I’m researching right now for my master’s thesis XD
-
Sh’aeri has a point, I do hope they’ll be reading the book but, most of all, using Uru as a bridge to the fan base would be awesome. The situation is awesome already, but you know what I mean :D

• Sorry, folks, just caught wind of this one.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark Johnson and the guy who did Donnie Darko? AWESOME!!!

• i just read the post ! great news indeed !

• @Trekluver While a lot of these articles are getting several things wrong, some of the errors are just misconceptions. That one you linked to got *almost* everything right. Yeah, they did write out what’s basically a summary of the original Myst, but that was just so newcomers would recognize the brand from their nostalgic past. Of course, the article went to the wayside by saying the movie’s somehow gonna be about the original game, but then later on it seems to contradict itself by saying it’s based on the “companion novels” as people are calling them. And there’s the misconception – folks at this point in the game are thinking the novels tie in directly to the game. But anyway, you made a great comment, Trek, pointing out that little detail :) And these little comments might all add up, and change peoples’ preconceptions about Myst while the subject’s fresh. So keep at it, guys!

Sorry for all the stream-of-consciousness posts. Still giddy!! :ridiculous:

• I read this last night, and it took a minute to sink in, and then I was like, wooooooah!!!!!! This is awesome news!!!! :D :) :D

• Oh maaaaaan, this is exciting news!!!!

• This is great news, guys! Keep up the GREAT work!

• Thought I’d stop lurking for news of this magnitude.
Yay! This is wonderful! Definitely good news.
And I can definitely sympathize with you Adrian, I have a cat whose favorite thing to do is sit on your lap and kneed your legs until they’re numb. I shudder to think what it’d be like if I had to travel with her!
