For The Press - A Project Summary

Feb
01

In 2006, Patrick A. McIntire & Adrian Vanderbosch (The Mysteriacs) contacted Cyan Worlds, Inc, the creator of the popular Myst franchise of video games, with the hope of generating a renewed interest in the development of a Myst-themed theatrical motion picture. A DVD submitted for Cyan’s viewing contained both a video letter outlining their passions and backgrounds, and a rough animatic movie trailer for the proposed motion picture project. As Patrick, Adrian and others had already been in private development of the project for over two years at that point, a richness and quality existed in the presentation that seemed to speak to the hopes that Cyan held regarding the possibility of the franchise migrating to the silver-screen. Both Rand Miller (CEO and creator of Myst) and Tony Fryman (President) of Cyan Words, Inc. shared with The Mysteriacs that this incarnation of the motion picture concept took a direction that had never been attempted before, and possessed a quality that made all previous attempts pale by comparison. Adrian & Patrick’s long shot to garnering Cyan’s support had succeeded in the best way possible; they immediately moved into further discussions with Cyan regarding how to proceed.

Early in the process, Tony and Rand candidly disclosed their desired role: we [Cyan] are not a movie company, we’re a game company - this is your realm, but let’s work together to make it happen - we trust you guys. Although Patrick & Adrian have not pursued exclusive motion picture rights, Cyan did extend to them the clearance and privilege to use whatever materials, characters and concepts that live in the Myst canon to the best of their ability to create and promote any materials that would lead to the execution of a large scale major motion picture production - one with Cyan’s endorsement on board.

With the reins in hand, and the security of knowing that any intellectual development (a 200+ page script, countless marketing materials, and a scaling promotional website) would be the property of not Cyan, but Mysteria Film Group, The Mysteriacs began to plan, coordinate and execute the path toward fruition.

Sorry if this has been asked somewhere else, but any chance you’ll be releasing the trailer for viewing?

Ooooo, when? where? Ooooo :)

Gaspeth! A trailer! OOOOOOOH can I see pleeeease?

Some day down the road, I hope to see the initial DVD presentation that got the attention of Cyan. If it ignited something in Cyan, imagine what it would do to us - the fans whose passions are already ablaze! It would make great bonus material when the movie eventually comes out on DVD. *returns the horse to the front of the cart*

It’s coming.

Oh wow, for a Myst fan like me, who has devoured the books, something like this is a dream come true. A dream that I must say, wasn’t really realised. In all the Myst worlds out there, even an online community, it’s… well it’s amazing. I don’t have many more words to use, but I certainly look forward to hearing any more developments.
Good luck to you both!

I remember playing Myst on my friend’s father’s old 256-color Mac back in 1995, when I was barely 6 years old. This is like a thousand dreams coming true!

Please don’t take this the wrong way but I hope you stay true to canon, I can’t stand to see another revolutionary story and game franchise be fouled like the rest of the “Video Game Movies”

I wish you luck and anything I can do to support you I will.

WhooHoo! A trailer…can’t wait to see it. More power to your brains guys (Zaaaaap)

I just wanted to let you people know that I am one of many people in the Guilds set up by Cyan for Myst Online: Uru Live.

You have, in every sense, our fullest support. We will do whatever we can to help you should it be needed.

On a non-formal note, I look forward to seeing this trailer. If it impressed Cyan, it must be of epic proportions.

If it impressed Cyan, it must be of epic proportions. I personally like it — but don’t get your hopes up for live action. The trailer is an animatic to set the tone of the film, and it does. The music’s really good, too.

Sorry if this has already been anounced, but is this going to be three different different movies based off of the books? And when will they be released? I’m excited, you have no idea! *squeal*

I remember playing Myst on my friend’s father’s old 256-color Mac back in 1995, when I was barely 6 years old. This is like a thousand dreams coming true!

Oh, yes, the sweet and strange childhood memories. Except with me it was my own dad’s old 256-color Mac (see, I was raised into a nerd, a Mac nerd, no less). Though I wonder, whenever this project gets to the finish line, how am I going to get my hands on it and actually see it, considering how annoyingly narrow the film distribution around here is.

Aaanyhow. You guys have all of my support! (And I guess now I’ll go and occupy myself with the games to stay patient.)

I read that this is based on the 2nd of 3 Myst novels - which is the Book of Ti’ana, right? That is the only one I haven’t read. So excuse my ignorance but I was just wondering, why that one instead of starting with the Book of Atrus?

Herohtar

2nd in chronological order or 2nd in release order? It makes sense to start with the Book of Ti’ana because that is the one that comes first chronologically — it’s the beginning of the story.

AndyCloseEyes
Mar 29 2008

“Why that one instead of starting with the Book of Atrus?”

Because it’s better (the best of all three, actually) and first in chronological order. :D

Robert The Rebuilder
Apr 03 2008

You all should read the Wired article about Ernie Cline’s success in producing a fan film on the Star Wars films. The parallels to this project are amazing.

BTW - I sent James Lee (the article’s author) an email, telling him about this project.

Robert The Rebuilder
Apr 03 2008

YOINGGG! Look at this, Patrick and Adrian - James Lee sent the following reply:
“Robert,

Thanks for the heads up! I’m a big fan of the Myst series, and I’d be more than happy to speak to someone about this new upcoming film.

Just shoot me an e-mail.

James Lee”

Thanks for the email, Robert :) We got a CC of that same response. It is much appreciated.

Looking for any crew? I was a 3D modeler on the “Book of Atrus” project.

Wow…just…wow. I, too, grew up with the franchise, and I just recently found this link. The fact that you’re taking the series so seriously, and are that willing to take the time and effort to make a movie true to the franchise is very comforting and just awesome, for lack of a better word. I wish you well on the project, and let me know if I can be of any help as well — I’m just a poor college student, but I’ll do anything if it means seeing the universe expanded just a little more.

Michael Nelson
Apr 18 2008

I Michael Nelson, the ACTUAL PRODUCTION COMPANY making the myst film would just like to announce that we will own the copyright of the Myst idea VERY SOON and if this outlandish crap wont stop with users from here deleting my Companies information on the myst wikipedia, we will SUE this companuy, Thank you.
Michael Nelson.

Michael, I want to encourage you to take a moment to consider how you are choosing to present yourself. Making legal threats on….well…I’m not sure what company you’re threatening to SUE…Mysteria?…just makes you look petty and foolish. Your information being deleted from the wiki (first I’ve heard of it) is in no way grounds for a suit. None of your rights have been violated.
As far as obtaining the rights to Myst, I would like to wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted on how that works out for you.
Thank you. Adrian Vanderbosch

Michael Nelson
Apr 18 2008

I, the CEO of Nelson Motion Picture Studios, would like to apologize for the previous accusation. I have been contacting Wikipedia administration and have found out that you guys had nothing to do with the deletion of my companies info. I wish that this skirmish between you and us can be overlooked. I am wanting to know if you would like to team up with us to help you with the production. We have all of the industrial animation and editing software. All the cameras and equiptment. I would be happy to work on this project with you guys. My dream is that Myst become a motion picture, not to be in a battle with you. Please accept my deepest apology and consider teaming up with us to make both of our dreams come true.
Thank You, Michael Nelson

Herohtar
Apr 18 2008

O.o

Michael, I, Co-Founder of Mysteria Film Group, thank you for your apology. It is appreciated. Unfortunately, I think we will have to decline your offer to collaborate with us. I believe I speak for both Patrick and myself in saying that your actions to date have not inspired much confidence in us that there is any potential for a successful working relationship with you. I encourage you to contact Tony at Cyan and discuss your ideas with him. I’m sure he would appreciate the respect of being informed of any Myst-related projects that you are currently producing.
Thank You, Adrian Vanderbosch

This just gets more bizarre by the minute…

Michael Nelson
Apr 18 2008

That is understandable, I will contact Tony at Cyan as soon as possible. I again, apologize for my actions, and hope that in time, after all of this has passed, we could talk about a deal in this project. When the film is made, I personally will ensure that you get the credit you deserve as a special thanks. Can you give me some contact information to help me get ahold of Tony please? Thanks again, and sorry.
Michael Nelson

Cyan can be reached through their website. Go to LEGAL. You will find an email address. Click on it. It will pull up a window for you. Write an email. Address it to Tony. Click send. He will read it. He will respond to you. You check your email. Open his email. Read it.

Additionally, please refrain from making claims that you have in any way joined forces with us. We are not affiliated with you in any way. That kind of misrepresentation is getting awfully close to fraud.

Michael Nelson
Apr 18 2008

Claims that we have joined? I have not made any claims. The only thing I have said is that I was proposing to make a deal with you. That is all. Anyways, thanks for the contact info. We will keep you posted on the development my project as it develops like you asked.

Herohtar
Apr 18 2008

And I quote from the Wikipedia talk page: “Nelson Motion Picture Studios teaming up with Mysteriac

We have recently teamed up, so it is your decision now to add us back on the Myst movie page.

If that’s not a claim, I don’t know what is…

Michael Nelson
Apr 18 2008

Other than the fact that I did not write that. It probably was one of my employees.
Well, I guess this is where we part ways. We will keep you informed when we have made the movie.

Herohtar
Apr 18 2008

Probably wasn’t a good idea to give your employees access to your Nelson Motion Picture Studios account on Wikipedia then; they might end up making you look bad. ;)

“When the film is made, I personally will ensure that you get the credit you deserve as a special thanks.”

Well, well. How gracious of you.

“Well, I guess this is where we part ways.”

Promise?

EDITOR NOTE: Fixed Deius :) Adrian

I find it very interesting how there seems to be no official record of any “Nelson Motion Picture Company” and that if such a company existed that the CEO would be corresponding not through the email address posted on the page, but in the comments section of the blog. Also, interesting to note is that he asked you how to get in contact with Cyan, when anyone who works in the business on any level would have the basic skills to be able to figure this information out on their own. Further, one can not buy copyrights, nor would Cyan sell them. When you buy rights, they are not copyrights, you are licensing the right to use the materials in whatever manner the rights holder deems appropriate. Again, anyone even remotely working in the business would know this. Funny how someone who supposedly owns a motion picture company with the kind of claimed access to equipment and personnel doesn’t seem to know anything about how the business actually works.

These are all the same points Patrick and I have discussed regarding this whole thing, MB. Couldn’t agree more. If anyone is interested, I’ve made a few posts over at Adventure Gamers about our project and the doubts surrounding it. The most recent includes some commentary on Mr. Nelson.

I read the thread over at AG, Adrian. You explained your situation and approach very well. I think it’s natural to have a number of skeptics out there, but as time goes on, people will come around. Until then you’ve got plenty of us obsessives to cheer you on. :)

Joel Hodgson
Apr 23 2008

I Joel Hodgson, the ACTUAL, TOTALLY LEGIT PRODUCTION COMPANY (I SWEAR) making the myst film would just like to announce that we will own the copyright of the Myst idea VERY VERY SOON (as soon as I find out how to contact Cyan). If you want to work for us, I will consider it. Otherwise, I will SUE YOU, Thank you.
Joel Hodgson.

AndyCloseEyes
Apr 28 2008

LOL, seriously….

AndyCloseEyes
Apr 28 2008

I just looked at the wiki article you provided, Adrian. It’s quite a comedy. “My link was removed and replaced with a fan site user blog that has no actual information regarding the Myst movie since this project has now become a ‘hollywood production’.”

The stranger
May 05 2008

I can’t see any real reason to do 2 seperate movies.Wy won’t you REALLY team up?

Because Michael Nelson is a fake. He is not really making a movie.

Haha,

Doesn’t anyone else see the reference here?

next there will be a post from “Tom Servo” or “Crow T. Robot”. /lol

“Michael Nelson” and “Joel Hodgson” were the hosts of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Since I very seriously doubt those actors are posting here, I’m guessing its some idi…er…some one having a laugh.

Of course, its getting annoying, not funny…so this guy needs to let the joke die.

That said….

I’m very excited to hear the Myst movie is finally happening! :D :D :D :D

Oh dear lord….
I had no idea. I had thought they were just names, lol!
And you expected us to believe you, seriously?
Yeah, Kierra (nice name)’s right, you need to stop.

I’m not entirely sure the MST3K thing was Michael Nelson’s angle here. I am fairly positive, however, that “Joel” was playing on that connection with his post. “Joel” was mocking Michael. They aren’t the same guy.

If you can check IP addresses that might be a good way to find out.

Too bad if thats his real name….shaming a perfectly good TV show with his behavior /lol
